NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

The students in JK & SK took turns to identify types of dwelling, They realized that not everyone lives in a single detached house. It was fun to see that many people do travel with their home. We are also learning the names of the main rooms.

Grade 1 worked on a clozed activity. They are begining to easily locate the missing words. Our vocabulary this week is about animals.

Grade 2 did a short revision on parts of the house and started on the introduction of time pieces. They were particularly interested in the atomic clock.

Grade 3 & 4 took their play on the stage for the first time today. It is fun to finally work on more than our memorized lines.

Grade 5 completed chapter 4 questions on the study novel 'Le voleur'.

Grade 6 were researching vocabulary for featured parts of a house. Tomorrow, they will share their findings.

Grade 7 & 8 read about the story of Louis Braille and his alphabet system for the blind. It was a very captivating subject and they were suitably impressed by what a blind young man could accomplish in such a short time.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

JK & SK are investigating the different parts of a house. This week, the vocabulary is related to the outside of the house. 

Grade 1 Students are adding adjectives describing different animals. We are building on riddles to find clues for sizes, colours and even actions to guess which animal we are talking about.

Grade 2 have just finished the last of the presentations on the water cycle, oceans and pollution today. They were able to find, share and discuss their projects. WELL DONE!

Grade 3 & 4 Many students are starting to master their lines and we should be able to get on the stage this week. 

Grade 5 They are reading the novel 'Le Voleur' and I am amazed at how competent they are in completing all the related activities independently.

Grade 6 will be completing their house booklet and will start researching their property for sale in the next few days.

Grade 7 & 8 reviewed the 'partitif' and will move on to the read and comprehension components this week. The topic will be 'Braille' as a language.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

C'est la journée de la Terre! Toute la semaine...

At The Maples, the students are inquiring about the use of water throughout our lives.
The vocabulary introduced is about the water cycle, pollution, the oceans, glaciers and our natural ponds. Watch for the posters and displays on this subjects.

We also investigated how plastic bottles may become our favorite fleece PJ's or sweater.

C'est ma responsabilité! It is my responsability to help clean up our environment.

Grade 7 & 8 are doing a revision of the passé composé verb tense as well as using the inversion when asking a question.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

C'est bientôt Pâques!

The students in JK, SK and grade 1 are applying the words 'sur, devant, derrière, sous, à côté de, dans' all around the classrooms. They were placing and locating various objects and identifying the correct preposition.

Grade 2 started to collect vocabulary and pictures for their 'water projects'. They were very keen on finding and sharing their information. 

Grade 3 & 4 continued their play study. Many of the students have learned their lines and are feeling more comfortable in their roles.

Grade 5 were very successful at weeding unwanted words in a series of sentences. Great comprehension level was demonstrated and WE ARE ONLY AT THE FIRST CHAPTER!!!
Good job everyone.

Grade 6 have finished the translation of the vocabulary. Tomorrow, we'll have a round the world game.

Grade 7 & 8 completed and turned in their letters. I will edit them this weekend.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Attention tout le monde!
Il ne reste que trois dodos avant le congé de Pâques!

JK & SK students are on the hunt for eggs. Watch for the location words such as 'SUR & DANS'.

Grade 1 were amazing today. They took a word chain and it was a race to find all the hidden words.

Grade 2 have inspected all the resource books on the subject of water. They have selected their particular areas of interest. Topics investigated were water pollution, water in the city, oceans, water cycle, frozen water.

Grade 3 & 4 The play: Un pique au coeur.

Grade 5 started on the first chapter of a novel called Le Voleur.

Grade 6 have started researching their vocabulary for real estates.

Grade 7 & 8 worked on their letter today and will have this completed by tomorrow.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

This short week, prior to the Easter break, the students are being challenged to complete some of their 'tâche finale' (projects) and for others, inquire into new ones such as 'l'eau, autour de nous'.

JK & SK have initiated their egg hunt with the prepositions 'sur' and 'dans'. As they are asked to place a egg in different locations in the classroom, they have to indicate vrai ou faux statements. Lots of fun and moving around.

Grade 1 are also working on prepositions (where things are). Today, they had a 'who is besides me' game. 

Grade 2 are demonstrating their knowledge of water around us and its impact on our daily life. So today, we established a word list and categorized water (l'eau) as soft water and salt water. They are revisiting water cycles and expanding their inquiries to conservation. This will be ongoing this week and the next.

Grade 3 & 4 students have made an valiant effort with memorizing their lines.
The students are starting to brainstorm about the meaning of the play and how best convey their roles to their audience.

Grade 5 were our audience for the grade 6 restaurant presentations. Wednesday will be their turn to present dream school to an earthling (moi).

Tomorrow, the grade 6 will start a real estate agent (un agent d'immeuble) unit. Yes! They will be inquiring about houses for sale in Quebec and then try and sell it to their peers.

Grade 7 & 8 will reflect on how we use our 5 senses and are in the process of writing a letter to a friend describing their invention.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER.


This was a very busy week for everyone in the school. The younger children were actively
observing signs of Spring and the older students were putting the finishing touch to their various projects.

JK & SK were listing their favorite birds and animals sightings from around their house. 

Grade 1 finished identifying the seasons from different post cards. Several students were successfully reading the short texts as well.

Grade 2 We started the introduction unit on water cycle. It was interesting to see their reaction when they realized how many words were the same in French and English. Our 'in-house' expression for theese words is BONUS WORDS (cognates).  Next week, the children will choose different areas of interest regarding water use in our lives.

Grade 3 & 4 THE PLAY, THE PLAY, THE PLAY.
The reading are proceeding well and everyone is encouraged to memorize their lines.

Grade 5 completed their questionnaire.

Grade 6 did a mock role play for their restaurant oral presentation. Monday, 14th is the day.

Grade 7 & 8 received instructions on their letter formatting. They will have 3 days next week to show their work in class.

News from the French Corner

JK & SK were practicing how to communicate their daily routine in French. This work is on-going.

Grade 1 took turns at reading the short text from their storyboards, using high frequency words and vocabulary from the clothing and weather units. This work can be daunting for some, but they are learning to take risks and learn.

Grade 2 completed their last oral and written activity on feelings and physical description.

Grade 3 & 4 took their second full reading of their play. Their reading fluency has much improved and they are adding some expression. All students should
practice their lines at home and memorize them.

Grade 5 completed their reading and comprehension activity today. It is amazing to watch them discover the similarity between English and French.

Grade 6 also completed their reading and comprehension unit and had time to rehearse their restaurant dialogue for Monday's presentations.

Grade 7 & 8 are continuing their work on the 'futur proche'.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER.

JK & SK have been using their knowledge of nature and made a collage of 
a tree and a branch with a nest and an egg with a newly hatched chick. The students are learning a riddle based on their collage.

Grade 1 children have completed a story board based on a clozed activity. They  proved to be risk-takers by illustrating their version of the story as well as demonstrated creativity when they had to modify their drawings to better represent what we read. WELL DONE EVERYONE.

Grade 2 added the finishing touch to their project 'Toute une journée'. While learning the parts of the day, they reflected and shared what they actually do during the day.

Grade 3 & 4 had their rehearsal of the play in the gym. They discovered that voices do not carry the same power or quality in a more open space (acoustics) then in the classroom. 

Grade 5 completed sentences by choosing elements from 3 different colomns.
This involved reflecting on which verbs to use with different subjects.

Grade 6 are working on their 'read & comprehension' segment of the unit. This should be completed on Thursday.

Grade 7 & 8 are using the principals of sentence construction while applying the 'futur proche'. They also read a short text (interview) about two carreers involved in the development of a prosthesis.

News from The French Corner

All through the school, the students are working on wrapping their units with their final projects.

JK & SK are starting a Spring unit complete with trees, nests and birds.

Grade 1 will finish the clothing unit this week and will start on the animals.
The object is to incorporate adjectives and descriptions.

Grade 2 are working of the parts of a day, greetings  appropriate to each part of the day. They are also illustrating their favorite daily activities.

Grade 3 & 4 are getting a good grasp of their play and are working on memorizing their lines.

Grade 5 are creating the school of their dreams. Rough copies are due Wednesday for editing.

Grade 6 have a verb test tomorrow, Tuesday. (er,ir,re verb endings).

Grade 7 & 8 are reviewing the verb tense 'futur proche'. They will write an open letter to a 'friend' describing and introducing their idea for an invention that will enhance someone living with a disability.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

C'est la fin de semaine!
JK/SK have completed their maple sugar unit and are heard singing inside the classroom and out.

Grade 1 have been listening to a CD story "Ma dent ne veut pas tomber\" since quite a few students have wiggly teeth.

Grade 2 are applying adjectives relating to their feelings and way of being all week. They ended the week with a general knowledge review game called 'round the world'.

Grade 3 & 4 are practicing their lines for the play and are starting to incorporate gestures and expression to the reading. They are encouraged to learn their lines at home. This play will take place at our Spring concert.

Grade 5 will submit their rough copy on Monday & Wednesday (April 7 & 9). They are creating a school that reflects their personal interests.

Grade 6 are applying the 'partitif' to a variety of foods and condiment and are preparing their menus for their presentation for role playing in a restaurant..

Grade 7 & 8 worked hard at unscrambling words to compose compouded sentences.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Bonjour tout le monde!

JK & SK are wrapping up the maple syrup unit with a story with a vocabulary identification card. Tomorrow, we will colour our last page for the sugar cabin. It was really sweet to have the children ask Mrs Logel if they could sing their French song during their library time.

Grade 1 are hard at work on the clothing unit and are completing cloze activities.

Grade 2 students are easily identifying adjectives in their feminine or masculine forms. They are having succes with using the negative as well.

Grade 3 & 4. We had a small class today due to many students participating in the Cariboo Math test. So, the grade 3 completed a reading and comprehension with the grade 4 students.

Grade 5 are continuing the use of the verb Aller in conjunction with different locations in and around the school. This is the formal introduction of the prepositions.

Grade 6 worked on polishing the use of 'choisir', 'commander'and 'prendre'.

Grade 7 & 8 are reading 'Sans frontieres' and are reviewing the futur proche.

News from the French Corner.

Here we go, my first attempt at blogging. I trust that students and parents reading this blog will come forward and offer their comments and suggestions.
Although the weather is still hanging onto Winter, Spring really is in the air here at The Maples.

The JK/SK class have been working on a maple syrup theme. We are singing and learning vocabulary related to making this truly Canadian liquid gold.
The children will be bringing home coloring on this subject as well as colorful fish in celebration of April 1st.

Today, the grade 1 & 2 were combined for French class. We created a bingo game with pictures of the necessary tools for syrup making. Then, we read a story and identified the vocabulary on the bingo card.  Everyone had a lot of fun.

The Grade 3 & 4 missed French today due to the assembly.

The grade 5 are working on the unit: Les extraterrestres. The star of the unit is the verb "Aller".

The grade 6 have completed their rough draft for a restaurant menus.  Today was dedicated to create a dialogue for a restaurant server and patron. The students will memorize the lines and will have to use them in a conversation as part of their final project. (After Easter)

The grade 7 & 8 did an improvisation,  one minute each, on a fishing expedition. They received an image on Monday, which they added on to create a unique fishing situation. It was truly "le poisson d'avril".
