The kids celebrated Halloween in style today.

All the classes today earned points by memorizing a song about the spider who got tired and all the vocabulary related to anything and everything haunted.

From Grade 3 to grade 8, the students worked at their dictionnary skills and dug hard into their memory in search for terminology. Great work and fun everyone!

THIS IS A LAST REMINDER FOR THE GRADE 7/8 TO COMPLETE THEIR PROJECTS.
THE DUE DATE IS MONDAY, NOV.3. THE CHILDREN WORKED ON THIS PROJECT IN CLASS, TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY.

Les petits gobelins et petites gobelines se préparent pour l'Hallow'een!

Grade 5/6 are starting to demonstrate their skills as detectives. They are describing each other as well as themselves to a T.  Tomorrow, they will describe their costumes. They have a vast vocabulary to choose from. Perhaps, some of them will be valuable investigators one day.

Grade 3/4 worked on unscrambling known vocabulary and did so well, they received an early Halloween activity sheet. And...out came the dictionnaries. They also have to memorize a spider song. House points will be given tomorrow if their respective house can sing it!

Grade 7/8 worked on their projects (due Monday) for the third consecutive day. They have some great ideas and most of the work should be done, with some touch ups at home for illustrations etc...They are learning to manage their time.

JK/SK, Grade 1/2 are polishing their vocabulary for Halloween. We are also matching numbers 0 to 30. Much fun today.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Last week of October, you know it means Hallow'een.

The French classroom is full of: fantômes, sorcières et citrouilles. Or is it des araignées  et des chauve-souris?

Grade 5/6 are reviewing clothing vocabulary and are adding adjectives. They are studying where to place them and how to work out the agreement in gender and number.

Grade 3/4 completed their letter to a favourite show and their will present them tomorrow. They had to identify what kind of show (documentaire ou dessins animés...). I will try to record them if there is enough time.

Grade 7/8 were given their directives for the next project: UN VOL. This is due next Monday, November 3rd. They will have class time to work and edit their story.

JK/SK were introduced to ghost, witch and pumpkin puppets. They are learning the spider's song and a skeleton on a bicycle. HEHEHEHEHE.

Grade 1/2 were also greeted by the Hallow'een puppets and had to listen to a story where the name of the character was mentioned. At that point, they had to raise theirs up high and do the required action.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

C'est la fin de semaine.

Grade 1/2 were divided in their houses and we played 'hangman' with the vocabulary. The students worked well and had fun earning points for their respective houses.

Grade 3/4 continued working on a letter to a fictional character of their favourite show. They are discovering the use of question words in French and at the same time working in collaboration. Also, they are honing their dictionary skills. The 3 houses were given a student profile to apply to their letter. They were: audacieux, investigateur and penseur.

Grade 7/8 received 6 pictures and vocabulary (verbs, nouns...) and had to use their communications skills as well as determine their own strengths for the better of their team.
The subject was a neighbourhood robbery. To be continued on Monday.

JK/SK are pretty knowledgeable when it comes to their colours. Today, we read 'Le maquillage à gogo'. Lots of laughs and the kids told me that they did not think it was necessary to use all that make-up to look good. The students said they are beautiful just the way they are. YAYYYY!

Grade 5/6 have decided that today they were going to use the colourfull mat that the Kindergarten were using. So we did all our unit reading from the floor. Go figure, they are growing up, but still want kids ' priviledges. On a Friday...I was happy to oblige.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

The morning went by very quickly today.

Grade5/6 started to ready 'Pauvre Alphonse'. The story is about a little pig and a detective looking for accurate description of a suspect. This unit contains a wide range of vocabulary. Watch for students describing mystery teachers around the class.

Grade 3/4 worked on a read and comprehension activity as well as un-scrambling sentences. Let me warn you...THEY ARE VERY GOOD AT IT!!!

Grade 7/8 warmed up with creating a sentence using irregular participe passé. Then, they worked on adverbs. They decided that they were better at it when I read aloud instead of them reading the sentences. They deduced that their aural skills were better than their reading skills.

Grade 1/2 worked in their group houses. Each group has a least a grade 2 leader as they are doing some transitions between aural, reading and written material.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 5/6 took their verb test today and many students demonstrated how attentive they have been and that they studied. BRAVO Ben, you aced the test with a perfect score!

Grade 3/4 did their puppet show and presented their introductions without cheat sheet! Hayden will present tomorrow as he was absent when we did the mini-rehearsal.

Grade 7/8 worked on Langue & Pratique, more specifically irregular participe passé. They stumbled on the expression 'déjà vu'. Now they do know what it means and where it comes from.

JK/SK were introduced to fruit we like to eat. That is after we counted backward from ten and let little ghosts go. Then, we became pumpkins! Fun day!

Grade 1/2 were divided by their house names, so 3 groups. A grade 2 student was leading each house.  After a few minutes of orientation, the students received an activity where the teacher would give them a statement (which they also had in writing) and they had to decide whether it was true or false. It took some time but they got it! Points were even.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Qui a passé une belle fin de semain?
Plus que tu en sais, plus tu sais que tu ne sais pas. This is a fairly loose translation (ask a grade 5/6) but we took a few minutes to discuss the words mastery (maîtrise) and apprentice (apprenti) to study what we don't know, because, now you know what you do not know.

Grade 5/6 have a short test tomorrow, Tuesday. The subject is ER ending verbs. They have been practicing for a week and they have graphed their progress.

Grade 3/4 demonstrated that they know and memorized their presentation. For the most part, they are ready to present tomorrow and show off their paper bag puppets. This will be fun!

Grade 7/8 reviewed the passé composé and adjectifs possessifs. They started the work individually, then corrected each other's work and took turn to mentor each other. It is always wonderful to see them working so well together.

JK/SK the students were read a book on the salmon run. We looked at a colourful picture of the salmon's life cycle. They were quick to point out that some of them were 'arc-en-ciel'. Yes, that is the word for rainbow!

Grade 1/2  The grade one group worked on completing colour and matching objects activity while the grade 2 group re-wrote a short dialogue in the correct order. During this time, the grade one group were listening to the instructions while doing their work. Well done!

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Today,we had several students taking the Caribou Math Test and others had to take an early lunch to go to a Track Meet. Best of luck everyone!

Grade 5/6 worked and played today. Actually, they played to learn their ER verbs. The name of the game is Connect 4 and teams have to fill a sequence of 4 spots on the grid. As long as the spots are adjacent to one another and they conjugate and use the verb in a sentence, they earn their points.

Grade 3/4 students took turns and used the 4 most commonly used verbs and made sentences of their own choice. The verbs were Avoir, être, faire, aller. (to have, to be, to do or to make, to go).

JK/SK students are working on the farm animals. Today, they earned house points when they could name some of the puppets names.

Grade 7/8 This morning we took up yesterday's homework and everyone did really well. Afterwards, they worked on a cross-word using the vocabulary from the unit. This is a very challenging activity where the students learned a few strategies by looking at the clues offered in the questions. ALWAYS read the question carefully because there lies the answer! So, they looked for gender and number agreements, conjugated verbs...at what tense...Oh yes, they were working

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

WOW! The first part of the school year is already behind us!

Grade 5/6 students worked on the largest verb group. The ER group. This is the easiest one to learn and very rewarding as well. It is said that there are about 10,000 of those in the French language. Regardless of the veracity of this number, it is well worth knowing, don't you think? Lots of practice to be had this week.

Grade 3/4 were happy to see their projects up on the classroom wall. Today, the students were invited to choose a short text and adapt it to their own presentations. This week, they will make a hand puppet and introduce it by memorizing their short text.

Grade 7/8 dealt with irregular participe passé commonly used with the passé composé. They realized that they had come across several of them already, so it was not difficult. They also learned to watch for prefixes so that if they know one, they should recognize several. Thank you Isabella for sharing your craft (en français) this morning. Well done!

JK/SK were eager this morning and took upon themselves to start the routine songs before I had time to sit down with them. They are so good! We are doing a short puppet sessions with farm animals in preparation for the unit of inquiry Down on the Farm. They have been singing À la ferme de Mathieu.

Grade 1/2 were divided in groups. The grade one group completed an activity with written names of colours while the grade 2 group worked on retrieving sections of speech in a vocabulary bank.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Aujourd'hui, nous avons fait...

Grade 5/6 students read a text on the joy and pitfalls of using Mr Google and the likes for instant translation. They are to complete the questions related to the text. The vocabulary was taken up in class. They were working so hard that they did not want to leave when the next group showed up at the door.

Grade 3/4  started their companion animal unit. We are working on short text to introduce a familiar pet. They will have a hand puppet (marionette) to make, something they are looking forward to! This unit introduces, for some, and re-inforces for others, the concept of gender in nouns and adjectives.

Grade 7/8 read 'Le cas de la planche à roulettes'. Connor earned 200 points for correctly retelling the story. The students went over the text to find where the passé composé verb tense was used. Great work, today!

JK/SK went through the routine with flying colours! We also started to sing ALOUETTE and identified different body parts. They also were quite sure that we did not sport 'des plumes' but we had 'des cheveux'. Great!

Grade 1/2 students took up the vocabulary for the family. They were invited to share activities they had with a family member. Most of them wrote two sentences and tomorrow they will illustrate their phrases.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

La poussière retombe et tout revient à sa place. Thank you to all the students who demonstrated cooperation and commitment by helping with the re-organization and clean up in the classrooms.

Grade 5/6 continued working with the adjectifs possessifs. They are now starting to grasp the concept. The students also reviewed common expressions from the unit. I also gave them a glimpse of the next unit where they will play detectives.

Grade 3/4 students had a good laugh with silly instructions for non-canadian animals. It is a fun way to review the vocabulary from present and past units.

Grade 7/8 were busy with the general organization of the school. However, they are able to follow instructions in French. Merci beaucoup!

JK/SK are having fun with pretending they are pirates. They have to use all 5 senses and the vocabulary is: les yeux, les oreilles, le nez, la bouche et les mains.

Grade1/2 worked in a circle format today. Simon Dit is a favourite game of theirs. They also played Buzz the number game. Just asked them!

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

The atmosphere is electric! The Maples Festival is almost here.

Grade 5/6 were hard at work with their own display of this unit projects. After this was done, they worked with the 'adjectifs possessifs'. They created their own sentences and shared their results so that we made corrections in a collective effort.

Grade 3/4 students worked on their unit vocabulary and unscrambled words and matched syllables to form words.

Grade 7/8 received house points for sharing tidbits of information in French. Thank you Andrew for sharing your treasure trove from Le Cirque du Soleil. We continued with the passé composé.

JK/SK have their French routine down path for the most part. First, the weather, then the calendar, then colours, then today a big book about trees in the Fall.
.
Grade 1/2 students wrote in their notebook a selected sentence about their favourite activity with their father. 'je sors en bateau avec mon père' or 'je sors en voiture avec mon père. Then, they illustrated their work. Tomorrow, they will do something avec maman.

CORNER NEWS FROM THE FRENCH

Mercredi, le milieu de la semaine!

Grade 5/6 students were introduced to possessive adjectives. Hum, lots to think about. What pronoun, what is the gender of the noun that follows...this is a big concept.

Grade 3/4 students are in the final stretch for finishing their booklet. They are an amazing group and they use their intuition with their knowledge of the vocabulary. Wow!

Grade 7/8 were hard at work with le passé composé. This is new for the grade 7 and a much needed refresher for the grade 8.

JK & SK are well on their way to recognize weather patterns and ask for the appropriate card.
Today, they coloured a picture of children picking apples.

Grade 1/2 played charades based on their current unit of inquiry. Tomorrow, they will draw and write in their notebook short sentences about responsibility.
