NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

We are almost in the homestretch! Between the PYP exhibition, the track and field competition and the PD day, the students are doing their best to learn about the remaining components for their respective grades.

Grade 5/6 students wrote their good copy of a letter to a fellow students at another school. This year, the schools they corresponded with are: East Garafraxa P.S. and St Andrew P.S.
They also applied themselves to fold a letter the correct way and addressed an envelope. In the days of email, it is a dying art. All in all,  they were keen to share  their likes with other kids.

Grade 3/4 The concert is fast approaching and the students are working on their skits. The whole class is happily offering innovative  ideas and taking ownership of the concepts presented.

Grade 7/8 have started on an exciting unit! It is all about travelling across Canada, COAST TO COAST TO COAST. They are learning about all possible modes of transportation. Today was all about the subways around the world.

Grade 1/2 are working on habitats. So, during French, they began underground with 'un ver de terre'. The rest of the week, they will hear life stories from 'L'araignéee et la mouche'.

PK/JK/SK were introduced to parts of the house. They have a riddle...let them tell you all about it. When they saw the book of the ver de terre, they requested the story as well. Great work!

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Ah, il y a tellement de changements. Les cours de français auront lieu dans chaque classe, tout comme avant.

Grade 5/6 read their French introductions for the PYP exhibition.  Most of the students who had a chance to read today, found themselves much improved in delivery and pronunciation. The goal is  to reach a  10. The general consent is that they are at 7.5 on average. When not reading aloud, the students were doing independent seat work in their cahier. They are working with prepositions, the verb voir and ocean reef vocabulary.

Grade 3/4 found that their posters were already hanging on their new class boards. The students gave their group presentations and correctly used the 5 senses.

Grade 7/8 are working on their last legend. They will be demonstrating the correct use of passé composé using the verb ÊTRE. They will be presenting their work at the end of Thursday French period.

Grade 1/2 worked on matching 2 parts sentences placed randomly on a sheet.  Many students quickly caught on the sight words and were eager to put them together. Bravo Macy, Lauren, Madison, Daniel, Alex, Vanessa for finding the most statements and getting house points!

PK/JK/SK were real troopers and took to the changes of scenery in great stride. The students continued with the  routine calendar and weather. Then, they easily answered a series of riddles including colours, sizes, actions and special body features. They could  name: un singe, un éléphant, un zèbre, un ours,  un lion et un tigre, une girafe, un perroquet et un poisson...

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 5/6 received their copy of the French version for their introduction/conclusion of the up and coming PYP exhibition. Benjamin opted to memorize his in French, a real risk-taker! Other students may follow suit, but if they want to read it, it will be alright as well. They will spend this week practicing and becoming more at ease with their pronunciation.

Grade 3/4 are building their vocabulary. This is the resulting work from their nature walk of last week. They are using their 5 senses: la vue, l'odorat, le goût, l'ouïe et le toucher. The verbs used are: je vois, je sens, je goûte, j'écoute et j'entends, je touche. The students are very eager to share their experiences.

Grade 7/8 took a pre-test this morning on passé composé with être. They understand what they have to review for tomorrow's test: make sure you can conjugate être and avoir...remember grade 3/4, memorize the DR MRS VAN DER TRAMP list of verbs requiring être for auxiliary.  The students have been working on the passé composé since early this year.

Grade 1/2 students were divided in 3 groups and were playing a game of actions to add to the following: je m'appelle.....J'ai...ans et je chante,  or je danse, or je trouve. Bravo to the team with the most cards (there  was a tie for second place).    Madison, Macy, Emma, Matthew and Madyson. House points were awarded.

PK/JK/SK were introduced to les animaux de la jungle et de la savanne. We had a song and learned adjectives such as grand, mince, gros etc...

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Enfin, c'est le mois de mai!

This morning, we had our monthly assembly and house games and therefore the grades 5/6, 3/4 did not have French. But, we will make it up next week.

Grade 7/8 used all their knowledge to de-code the following pronouns: on, en, y. THEY WERE SUCCESSFUL! They were able to reduce sentences to their bare bones, structureally speaking, then, put all the elements back in place. They found the exercise quite challenging.

Grade 1/2 took a team challenge and acted out several actions. There was quite a bit of animation in the class and everyone participated.
A BIG THANK YOU TO THE STUDENTS WHO DONATED PENCILS TO THE CLASS BASKETS.  AN EVEN BIGGER THANK YOU TO THE PARENTS WHO SENT WHOLE PACKAGES OF PENCILS.

PK/JK/SK were treated to Fablanimo. This is a song/story CD about animals learning to  get along on the farm. The students are also learning to name the animals in French when they hear the sound they make.
