Il pleut, mais à l'école il fait beau!

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 3/4 The students took turn to describe their casual wear. They also had to describe and spell the names for clothing and many students could do it without even looking at their sheets!

Grade 7 received their tests back. Bravo, Abby for acing both of her tests. The students worked on their rough copies for their presentations on Monday.

Grade 8 Students worked on their presentation. They are putting the final touches to their skits, police report, identity cards and invitation. They will present on Wednesday and have invited grade 7 as their guests/audience.

Grade 5/6 They are working on transfering verbs which are used for both social animals and humans. After this, they used verbs applying only to humans. They are almost ready for their booklets.

Grade 1/2 The puppets are such a big hit. Halloween is time for stories, sometimes the students come up with their own. They earned some colouring time of  a witch with a broom. Vocabulary is: Sorcières, balai, citrouille, fantôme. They also know some actions such as voler, rouler, sauter, flotter...

JK/SK They too have the Halloween puppets but today they also wanted to see the weather cards. It was good for the JK to have the visual to match to what they hear and say. They also coloured a large 'citrouille'. Bravo, Leon, for using other colours than his usual blue.

C'est l'Halloween cette semaine!

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 3/4 students are learning simple verbs ending in ER. They have discovered that when we use 'TU' the verb ends with an 'S'. You would be pleasantly surprised to hear that they are reading from the textbook and activity sheets quite easily. Well done!

Grade 7 took their test on vouloir and pouvoir as well as a short read and comprehension component. They did not have much difficulty at all.
I also read a sample text for them and they had to fill the blank. Everyone did very well. They now have a model to use for la tâche finale.
This project is due on Monday, Nov. 2 and they will have time in class to work on the text. The students have a rubric and know what is expected.

Grade 8 Matched newspaper headlines to an article. They are learning to use the vocabulary for detective work, computer (cyber) crime.
They will have time in class to complete their skits, invitation, identity card, police report etc...This is due for presentation on Wednesday, Nov.4

Grade 5/6 Several students had not completed their homework and had to work on it during class. When the assignments were finished, grade 6 went to the library to get French books and write a short summary.
Grade 5 took grade appropriate reading and did the same.

Grade 1/2 It is Halloween puppet time! They have been waiting for this for weeks! So, they are learning about action words, matched songs and made skits.

JK/SK had fun with the puppets! It is amazing how they are willing to speak when using the puppets! Lots of singing going on too!

Mercredi!

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 3/4 started working on writing the clothing vocabulary and after they studied the spelling with a partner (s), we had a spelling bee and played hangman. This was a very fun way to learn your words.

Grade 8 took their passé composé of irregular verbs. The results were quite good overall. The students then started to think about their next project. This will be a group mystery evening and they are starting with their invitation cards. More on the subject next week.

Grade 7 Worked on a text: how to order concert tickets by phone. Once they knew the meaning of each verb, it was very easy to complete.
Please study vouloir and pouvoir for your test on Monday. There will be a short reading and comprehension section to complete but the vocabulary will be very familar.

Grade 1/2 The students started the vocabulary for Halloween in oral activities. Then, they completed a cloze activity where they had to find missing parts of well known words. The grade 2s were a great help with their classmates and earned house points.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 3/4 The students were working very hard this morning. They were describing each other's clothing and then we moved to the adjectives. They observed that the adjectives had to be in agreements with the nouns they describe. So, they were talking about feminine, masculine and plural. This will be the focus for this week.
Homework is to describe a family member's clothing in as much detail as possible.

Grade 7&8 The lesson today was about VOULOIR, C'EST POUVOIR! A review for some and new verbs for others. These verbs are to be memorized!
Grade 7 worked on questions referring to the text read last week. This was a good opportunity to review the unit's vocabulary.
Grade 8 had some time to pair up and study for Wednesday's test. Review p. 218

Grade 5/6 reviewed er and ir regular verbs and they are getting quite good at it. They also took up avoir and être. They also listed insects/animals that are called social in preparation to the unit project. After this, they listed verbs that go with certain adjectives. Well done!

Grade 1/2 are working so hard and they succesfully did a couple of pages of vocabulary cross-words. They also can recognize that when they hear the question Qui est-ce? they have to answer with the name of a person as oppose to Qu'est-ce que c'est? where you have to answer with a thing.

JK/SK are starting to recognize the vocabulary for body parts and can place the cards accurately. They also had a duel with counting 0-30 and Wow!!! they are very competent.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 3/4 the students had fun taking turns on our fashion run-way and listened to descriptions of their clothing. Then, they read from the textbook and learned to say je porte, il/elle porte accompanied with clothes and colours.

Grade 7 took up the homework from Wednesday and they felt pretty proud of themselves when they mastered l'impératif. Excellent! After that, they read about sounds from around us and answered questions.

Grade 8 Started on Cris et Frissons. They discussed the scenario and the different computer terminology. They took a lesson on irregular past participles. Please study p218 for a test on Wednesday.

Grade 1/2 really worked hard and had a bingo with colour and numbers WELL DONE! It was far from easy for these young students to combine two different tasks. Seth, Maddy, Sofia and Orla took an extra task and unscrambled words.
I am so  amazed at what they can do.

JK/SK played with cards with pictures and words of boday parts. They were quick to refer to the song 'tête, épaules, genoux et pieds' They reviewed the 5 senses and went looking for soft, rough surfaces...

Mercredi!

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 3/4 This morning's assembly was quite exciting. A representative from the Terry Fox Foundation came to present the school with the 20th year banner and the students presented a cheque.
In class, we used a spin wheel with different characters and sports. They practiced to say 'IL, ELLE'...aime or n'aime pas and added the sport. They also repeated the excercise in writing.

Grade 5/6 The students received their projects back and were given additional instructions for future assignments such as FOLLOW the rubric for maximum results.
Afterwards, they read the begining of unit 3, yes we are skipping unit 2 which will be more fun to do closer to the Holidays. For now, they are exploring the activities in a ant hill,  yes, an ant hill! New verbs and adjectives and a lot to learn about social animals and insects.

Grade 7/8 we took up the homework from last week. A few students had not done their part, so we took up a bit more time.
Grade 7 started a new unit on Le Rythme. They took up the vocabulary.
Grade 8 completed a pop quiz on unit reflexive verbs and adjectives.

Grade 1/2 had their first mini-quiz and it was a great success! Then everyone was assigned a slate and they had to draw what they heard. Well done.

JK/SK went through the routine and Brooke did the calendar by counting 1-11 without help! Bravo. They had a story read: Benjamin plante un arbre. Then, they coloured a booklet on the 5 senses.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 3/4 students worked on their activity: Tout sur MOI! This is where they describe themselves with name, age, favorite activity, likes and dislikes.

Grade 7 are organizing their stories and presenting their choices of facts from a large list. They are very creative and some stories were quite amusing.

Grade 8 presented their Web/Facebook page about themselves. They worked really hard for this project and peer edited their work like pros! These were excellent presentations and the students were very creative. Well done!

Grade 7/8 had a combined lesson/refresher on l'inversion and various ways to ask a question. They also reviewed their adverbs: beaucoup, assez, peu and trop.
Homework is to complete the section (both sides) of the 'conjonctions', mais, et, ou and parce que...

Grade 1/2 are learning parts of a sentence in English with their sentence buddies. So, it was fitting that we made the connection with French. They came up with short sentences to act out and say. The setting today was the town square and the road where they demonstrated who they were by saying Je suis...une danseuse, la police, une artiste, une actrice, un conducteur, un pirate and Tiffany was the police and arrested whoever stayed on the road too long.
They finished the session with drawing and coloring a Fall/Thanksgiving picture.

JK/SK worked really well today and everyone was participating. They are singing Alouette (which for today was a turkey). This is how we are learning the body parts. They also demonstrated great colouring skills on their Fall picture.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 3/4 The class took up the homework from last week and described what they may have to eat at different meals. Following this, they learned to say j'aime and je n'aime pas...different sports. They are reading the simple sentences and writing them as well. Great work!

Grade 7 had their presentations of a comic strip and story ending. For a first tâche finale, they did well. The class re-wrote sentences that needed to be un-scrambled. The double verb construction with aimer+verb with the negative can be tricky to put together.

Grade 8 students worked on their web page and peer edited. They also reviewed the rubric to make sure that they had all the elements required. This is due on Wednesday, October 7.

Grade 5/6 were super charged today. They completed the comprehension segment of a reading from last week and everyone was doing an excellent job!
They finished with a quick game of vrai ou faux and I must say that they were great at detecting details that were false.

Grade 1/2 Today, we talked about the process of fruit trees (mostly apple trees) growing in the orchards. Maddy proposed that they break up in small groups and each make a short skit with drawings, homemade props and used the vocabulary
such as: graines, racines, tronc, arbre, branches, fleurs, pommes, poires, pèches, cerises.

Grade JK/SK hosted their lesson with the grades 1/2. We read La petite poule rousse and talked about sharing the work to share in the bounty. They also sang Alouette and we used our friendly turkey body parts for vocabulary.
At last, they had a competition with counting 1 to 35, JK/SK against Gr.1/2 and the results were really close.
