NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 8 French presented their summatives, and Grade 9 French gave thoughtful feedback. Both groups played Noël Kahoot.

Grade 4-5 students took up their homework, and completed the last task for the unit. Well Done!!!

Grade 6 Kahoot was the popular game today. Joyeux Noël!

Grade 1 students had a singing context with a medley of French Holiday songs.

JK/SK It was the last call for the Christmas puppets songs.

Grade 2-3 The tradition continues, and students illustrated a directed story. Super!

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French students handled a story about Scrooge, where they had to add passé composé verbs as they heard it read to them. This is a good way to do a bit of review, and have fun as well.

Grade 8 French- students used the period to work on their rough copy for presentation of an animal. Here is the checklist: use the pronoun 'on', use the superlative and comparative with irregular adjectives, use as many adjectives as you can in your description, minimum 10 sentences.
PRESENTATIONS ARE ON THURSDAY

Grade 4-5 students presented today. They reflected back on their efforts, and here are a few comments: work on pronunciation and intonation, work neatly on appropriate paper (not torn off your notebook), and submit work on time (in case of doubt, read the blog, ask a classmate), illustrations (when required) should be in colour. All things to work on in the New Year.
HOMEWORK: cross word puzzle p.44 A & B.

Grade 6 students Today, students listened, as well as read, a text about Dr. Fleming's discovery of penicillin. They were able to answer 10 questions related to the text. (Bravo Daniel for working independently, and using the context to find the answers).

Grade 1 Students spent time guessing holiday themed vocabulary, and singing the 12 days of Christmas in French. TRY TO SING 'et une perdrix dans un poirier nain!'

JK/SK students are learning to say JOYEUX NOEL, BONNE ANNÉE, and they coloured  'un bas de Noël'. SK were asked to write their words too.

Grade 2-3 students listened and illustrated a story about the 5 Maples Christmas Holiday Characters. While listening, they drew, and had to re-tell the story with as many details as possible. They had fun adding details in each group. Then they counted their accumulated points.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

MANY THANKS FOR THE WONDERFUL LUNCH! IT IS APPRECIATED AND  HEART WARMING TO SEE OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY COME TOGETHER AT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR.  MERCI DU FOND DU COEUR

Grade 9 French The first period was a review of irregular verbs in passé composé, as it will be part of their mid term exam in January. The second period was a listening and visual activity where they watched Master Chef France, and recorded vocabulary.

Grade 8 French students listened and read about 3 different animals, answered questions. These will be marked.
HOMEWORK: for Tuesday, prepare 1 to 2 minutes talk about an animal (not domestic), write a description using superlative, comparative with descriptive adjectives, and don't forget to use the pronoun 'ON' at least once.


Grade 4-5 Students worked on their rough copy (in their cahier). You should only have to write a good copy, and either illustrate or find a suitable picture of your dream career. Tuesday is presentation day.

Grade 6 This was a short period (because of lunch). Students filled in missing vocabulary in a story. They were quite fast!


Grade 1 students reviewed holiday terminology, and completed their word search.

JK/SK students are having fun with the hand Christmas puppet, singing each song for each characters. They also had an interactive story about 'Casse - Noisettes (the sort version).

Grade 2-3 Today was about a directed colouring activity. It included a holiday scene, and a variety of objects and colours.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French - After a peer assessment, and rehearsal, students presented their Monster Film, including a short synopsis, and well done poster. The second period they watched Master Chef, France.

Grade 8 French- students worked on comparative and superlative, and adjectives.
Homework: complete the worksheet.

Grade 4-5 students are now using a variety of ER ending verbs to express activities performed in several careers.
Homework: have the name of your preferred career.

Grade 6 Because of rehearsals, the class was a bit short. Students did a cloze activity with the verbs: vouloir, pouvoir ,and devoir.

Grade  1 The Christmas hand puppet is out! Students are singing a few favourite French songs.

JK/SK Very enthusiastic students, all trying to get house points for naming famous Christmas characters.

Grade 2-3 Students had fun searching for holiday themed words. Several house points were given today!!!

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French students used the first period reviewing passé composé by playing Kahoot. They also had their rough copy edited, and presentations are on Wednesday.

Grade 8 French Today, 3 students had their riddles completed, and Ryan had the upper hand in this game. The lesson was 'le commparatif des adjectifs'.
HOMEWORK complete the worksheet for Wednesday.

Grade 4-5 Students began using the negative. More on this on Wednesday.

Grade 6 students had a 'cloze' activity using vocabulary from the unit.  Everyone did really well. HOMEWORK, please complete the cross word puzzle for next class.

This afternoon, there was a dress rehearsal for the concert. Grade 1 had only a few minutes to answer a few riddles about Christmas vocabulary, and JK/SK did not have French today.

Grade 2-3 students worked on applying gender too a few but frequently used adjectives. Most students had time to write a short description of a girl named Clodine.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French students co-wrote a checklist for the up coming summative. So, here is a summary: you will need to create a poster (regular size paper), it should have a title, the main actor, date of release. You will need to write a short blurb for your film, cite your sources (your research). The rough copy is due Monday, Dec 10.

French grade 8 French students continued working on the pronoun ON. They started writing questions, or riddles (5) for Monday's game: guess what the animal is.

Grade 4-5 After correcting the homework, students read little books on a variety of careers, and read passages aloud.

Grade 6 students watched C'est pas sorcier, les microbes, l'invisible.

Grade 1 students completed and reviewed parts of the face, finished colouring HENRY, which will be put in their IB binder. They listened to a story of a small fir tree with great ambition to become a bid tree, leave the forest to become a Christmas tree in a big house.

JK/SK students were happy to colour their star (title of their song). They are beginning to talk about all things holiday!

Grade 2-3 As a reward for their hard work, they listened to a Christmas story. They quickly identified old vocabulary, and learned a few new words too.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French students only had half of their alloted time due to a longer assembly. They worked on their project.

Grade 8 French students worked with the 'pronom' On. This will be the focus for the rest of the week.

Grade 4-5 students are applying different verbs for a variety of careers, and match attributes necessary to accomplish the work.

Grade 6 Today, the group began to work with a new verb: 'devoir', in both forms, affirmative and negative.

Grade 1   Review of parts of the face, a little bit of counting, and who has their holiday tree up. Where does it come from.

JK/SK The holiday vocabulary has begun to filter in the classroom. Students shared what they had in their tree: un ange,  une étoile, des boules et des lumières. They listened to a story about a letter going to: Père Noël, le Pole
Nord, les cadeaux.

Grade 2-3 students read and worked on simple questions about the text.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French students did a short oral activity following a format (set of questions). They also read p. 77,78, and answered the comprehension questions.
If you have not completed that activity, please consider this homework.

Grade 8 French students read about a variety of animals used in medecine. It was great to observe how quick they were able to retrieve the terminology.

Grade 4-5 The work today was to identify 'ce qu'il faut faire...' for certain classes.
For example, 'dans la classe de français, il faut parler français, ...
Students were really quick at completing the cross word!

Grade 6 Today was a wrap up of riddles, and sentence making. Excellent and fun work!
There was no afternoon class: The Grinch! is in town.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French students took a short test. They were able to receive feedback, and self assess their knowledge. They also applied the concept of passé composé by changing the subject to 10 sentences.

Grade 8 French students answered a few riddles, and quickly grasped the concept of the pronoun 'ON'.

Grade 4-5 Today was about asking questions to a celebrity (eventually classmates) about their career. Est-ce qu'il faut lire et écrire? Oui, il faut lire et écrire etc.

Grade 6 students applied their knowledge of irregular adjectives to a variety of sentences, including their own phrases.

Grade 1 students added a few more physical features to HENRI. He does look funny with his: cheveux, front, menton, joues, nez, narines, yeux, sourcils, cils etc.
JK/SK The song is slowly coming to life, and students are excited for the concert. They also continue learning and reviewing their body parts by singing 'tête, épaules, genoux et pieds...'.

Grade 2-3 Two questions for the day: qui est-ce? and qu'est-ce que c'est? Is it a thing, an animal, a place, or a person?

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French students are working with passé composé avec être. They worked on listening activities, and written.
TOMORROW there is a quiz. So please, study the verbs and their irregular participe passé, and make sure you can conjugate être in the present tense.

Grade 8 French students are realizing that if you use verbs, they should be conjugated. Students made sentences, began using the pronom ON. (more on this tomorrow). Also, they will use today's riddle in a game tomorrow.

Grade 4-5 Today, students read 4 texts/interviews about different careers. They learned about the expression: IL FAUT...
HOMEWORK: find vocabulary you want to use for the summative. We will discuss it tomorrow.

Grade 6 students began to work with irregular adjectives. The lesson was to write them in all forms: masculin singulier, pluriel, féminin singulier, pluriel.

Grade 1 students met with HENRI, The French Clown. Today, they are beginning to label parts of the face.

JK/SK students are beginning to know the song J'allume une étoile. They also colooured the cover page for the song.

Grade 2-3 They are continuing with adjectives, riming words, feminine and masculine.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French- Students took up their homework, and had time to write a reflection on the unit's statement of inquiry. They also participated in establishing co-constructed success criteria for the coming summative task. The second period, they unscrambled a story by numbering different facts. 

Grade 8 French- Homework was checked, and students did a round of vocabulary knowledge oral quiz (observation). They also had an information grid to fill in from the text read yesterday.

Grade 4-5 Verbs are still on the menu today: verbs ending in ER, and Être. Students were able to connect adjectives, in the correct gender and numbers, and relate them to specific occupations.

Grade 6 The lesson today was about finding words from the same family, which students did easily. Then came the questions! Students learned to used the 'big words' in the questions and find the answers in the text. They are beginning to use critical thinking, and learning that answers come with more than one word.

Grade 1 discovered that they are Mad Math Machine! All in French, and adding or subtracting numbers in a round robin. Well done!!!

JK/SK They are working on their winter concert song, and miming emotions. 

Grade 2-3 Students are working on adjectives in feminine and masculine forms.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French- Students took turns to read about the heroine Ann Darrow (in the King Kong movie). They answered a few questions, then listed the verb requiring Être as an auxiliary in passé composé. Although you will see 'Passé Composé' quite a bit this year, know that it is a difficult concept, and students will work on it for the whole year.
HOMEWORK FOR TOMORROW: if the activity using unit vocabulary is not finished, please have it done for Wednesday, Nov. 21.

Grade 8 French students read about facts regarding rare animals. They worked with basic vocabulary, and will translate 'les mots clés' for tomorrow.

Grade 4-5 Today, students used 2 verbs to talk about what people do in their careers: Être, and ER ending verbs. This lesson will continue tomorrow.

Grade 6- students read a short story, and familiarized themselves with terminology related to microbes and their functions.

Grade 1 This week is all about Math and additions. To be continued tomorrow.

JK/SK Students are practising their concert song. They like the melody, and are beginning to pronounce the words correctly.

Grade 2-3 students were able to colour, cut and assemble their cube. A few students played rolling the cube and answer the questions. They will play this at home, and report how much fun it was playing with the family. They also reviewed basic 2 and 3 dimensional shapes.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French students reviewed their homework, and peer/teacher assessed their work. They also got a preview of the next unit 'Les Monstres dans la Littérature et les Films'. They watched a short video about the making of Godzilla to stir things up. They chose an area of exploration according to their ancestry, and will pick a monster to talk about.
HOMEWORK: read p.60,61,62 and answer all 10 questions on a separate sheet. DUE FRIDAY.

Grade 8 French students read their paragraph/ sentences, and used a selection of verbs to be put in passé composé (you were given a sample to work with from Monday's class).
There are 2 students who still need to turn in their unit 2 summatives, and please remember that homework is generally due the following class.

Grade 4-5 Students read an interview about careers, and the attributes required to fulfill a dream job.

Grade 6- Today was the beginning of unit 3: good or/and bad microbes and virus. They will be mixing general knowledge, sciences and French all together.

Grade 1- Today, they continued with the shopping for clothes at stores. Students were quite competitive to tell what was being purchased. They also listened to a story of a dragon who was being bullied at games. They were using basic feeling terminology.

JK/SK To tag along with U.O.I. Les saisons and feelings, students mimed four basic feelings: pensif, triste, content and fâché, matching them to their favourite season.

Grade 2-3 Today was about reading and re-writing a day in a clown's life. These activities were enjoyed by everyone, and it included reviewing the parts of the day.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French- students listened to a series of conversations (audio), and practiced extracting information from multiple answers, or pictures to demonstrate their understanding.
HOMEWORK is to have your weekend information to complete the oral activity on Wednesday. Make sure to use passé composé! This is not a 'read my sheet' kind of activity, but an opportunity to express yourself.

Grade 8 French- students read a story with several blanks, and had to chose the appropriate verb from a pre-determined list.
HOMEWORK pick 5 verbs from the list, and write a paragraph.

Grade 4-5 students were invited to make sentences with the verb avoir (conjugated) with different subjects and endings.
Next unit is about careers.

Grade 6 Students read a text about the group STOMP, and answered questions about the text.

Grade 1 Students acted out buying winter clothes in a store. Everyone played a role, asking for a hat or boots...asked for a specific colour, a different size, and how much it cost.

JK/SK They played' Simon dit' game, and the JKs are counting to 10-12 reliably for the most part, and SKs up to 30-31 also.

Grade 2-3 Students have begun to learn about emotions, represent them with emoji, and role play different emotions.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French The first period, students viewed an episode about forensic investigation (in French). They also acted as a coaching panel for the Grade 8 French presentations.

Grade 8 French Presentations were done, feedback given by the grade 9 French.

Grade 4-5 AU CHAMPS D'HONNEUR… students did some research about where to find Flanders'Field, and how to wear the poppy. They recited the poem in French.

Grade 6 Great day in grade 6! Everyone presented their sound track and CD promotion. Well done!

Grade 1 When you hear AU CHAMPS D'HONNEUR, you also know what you are hearing: In Flanders Field. One student in particular recognized the tone of the poem, and immediately made the connection.

JK/SK students coloured poppies for the 'Jour du Souvenir'.

Grade 2-3 Students listened to the poem AU CHAMPS D'HONNEUR, extracted vocabulary, and made an original cross word in their cahier.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French Students did their 'Cris et Frissons' presentations of a well known board game 'Clue'. They also worked on sentences to demonstrate their knowledge of passé composé.

Grade 8 French Rough copies were handed in for editing and conversation. PRESENTATIONS ARE ON WEDNESDAY, NOV. 7

Grade 4-5 Today, students presented their mystery teacher along with a description. Well Done!

Grade 6 Students handed in their rough copy, practiced their oral presentation for WEDNESDAY.

Grade 1 Students observed a picture of 'coquelicot, casque, croix, petite clôture'' objects for Remembrance Day: Le Jour du Souvenir'. They also were surprised to hear that souvenir is a French word they were already using.

JK/SK After the routine work, students learned about animals that participated or contributed to the war effort. Wednesday, they will have colouring activities to honour them.

Grade 2-3 Today was the start of unit 2: les émissions de télévision. They learned about asking questions about their favourite T.V. show.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French Thank you for turning in your rough copies. There were a few edits needed, verbs in particular. Now, type your good copy, double space, have your name and the date as well. To present you will need: the invitation (make it look inviting), a police report, and a drawing/picture of the room where the murder happened (think the game of Clue style). You will present on Monday, so read it a few times aloud to make sure you are familiar with your text.

Grade 7 & 8 watched Tintin, tract down vocabulary from both the unit, and the movie, and made sentences in passé composé. I think Zeta house won!

Grade 4-5 students went around the school to observe a teacher or school staff, and describe them using the unit terminology. Monday, is presentation day, and students must have a drawing of the teacher of their choice along with the description.

Grade 6- Students had the period to work on their promotion of a CD. They will record a short sound track (10-20 seconds). They only have to adapt a script that they already had, worked on and read during class, and change a few names to fit their sound track. WHAT IS IMPORTANT IN THIS TÂCHE FINALE IS THE ORAL PART. So, read it a few times, Monday you will have a chance to do 1 mock presentation before Wednesday.

Grade 1 The class watched an episode of C'est pas Sorcier' Les Dinosaures en France'. EVERYONE  GOT STICKERS TO PUT ON THEIR CHART.

JK/SK After the routine work of greetings and weather, students heard the story of 'Ma vie d'araignée'.  

Grade 2-3 Students read a short story, answered questions, and read with much intonation.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French Today, students had their work edited (what they had done). They used the period to work on their rough copy due Thursday, and had time to add to the content of their story. Presentations are on Monday, Nov. 5

Grade 8 French There was time to edit the rough (or partial rough copy) for most students. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT USING GOOGLE TRANSLATE WILL BE HEAVILY PENALIZED. Summative tasks are meant to demonstrate what you have learned during the unit: language conventions and terminology.
During Thursday's period, I will look at the work that was not ready to be shown today, while students watch a movie 'Tintin, le détective'. Presentations will be on Wednesday November 7, no exceptions.

Grade 4-5 Students had fun drawing caricatures, while listening to fun descriptions. Please finish p.18, if not done during class.

Grade 6 VOULOIR, C'EST POUVOIR! Students did really well working these 2 verbs. For Thursday, make sure to have what you want as a sound clip for your project. You need 10 to 20 seconds sound clip.

Grade 1 The Halloween puppets made an appearance. There was a lot of singing and story telling.

JK/SK Students had fun using the puppets to follow along a story, and perform actions in small groups.

Grade 2-3 The activity was to fill in blanks with appropriate verbs, or expressions. Then, students paid close attention to the punctuation while reading short dialogue. They worked on intonation!

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French Students self corrected their formative task, and discussed their success criteria and benchmarks to show their growth. Also, they were given instructions to begin working on their final task. It was rewarding to see how they are able to take ownership of the summative's content.
For Tuesday's class, they will have their outline for their rough copy, and take that period to work on their rough copy DUE THURSDAY.

Grade 8 French students had a quick warm up with 2 verbs: Sortir and Partir. Following this activity, students worked with the formation of adverbs. They also have received their directives for the summative task.

Grade 4-5 Students learned how to make short sentences for description of physical features in preparation for next week's tâche finale.

Grade 6 Students took up the negative form of verbs such as VOULOIR AND POUVOIR. This was followed by a lively round of vocabulary search.

Grade 1 Today was a day to finish up the week's task, and pretend that they were in a store bying clothes.

JK/SK Puppets are very popular at this time of the year: FANTÔME, SORCIÈRE ET CITROUILLE came to play.

Grade 2-3 The school had a special assembly and a very popular guest to celebrate Terry Fox pledges. It was fantastic.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French students continued working with passé composé with a quick review of irregular participe passé. Homework was checked, and students worked on a formative activity which gave them the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, thinking, communication and application of the work done so far.

Grade 8 French Students read their paragraph, and gave away who was the culprit was in the story they read. Today's lesson was SORTIR AND PARTIR.

Grade 4-5 Today was a great opportunity to describe what eve3ryone was wearing, since we had casual day. Then the students corrected sentences on the board. They are quite good at detecting the gender of adjectives.

Grade 6 students took up the vocabulary and worked with 2 new verbs VOULOIR AND POUVOIR to further enhance their sentences.

Grade 1 students are working with new vocabulary related to clothing. They will be opening a store and shop! They are excited about this!

JK/SK met the Halloween puppets: fantôme, sorcière et citrouille...and Frankie. They sang, and began to learn actions that these characters can perform.

Grade 2-3 Students corrected their homework, working with rhyming words, and riddles. We also read and learned a bit about BATS!

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French Students continue to work with passé composé of irregular verbs, and apply it to theme related terminology.
HOMEWORK: please make sure you complete the work you did during class: due Wednesday.

Grade 8 French The class is learning that applying verbs in a sentence, is nothing if you do not understand the meaning of the said sentence. Note for everyone: please do not leave words or expressions you are not sure about, look them up.

Grade 4-5 Students are begining to describe people in more detail. Colour adjectives are a topic right now.

Grade 6 Avoir and ëtre, and expressions are begining to be used more reliably. Also, there was a reading about the different sounds heard in daily lives.
HOMEWORK: Learn the MOTS CLÉS, and translate.

Grade 1 The theme for today was counting by 10, 0-100. Then on to the 'dinosaures, and how the weather may have prompted their 'disappearance.

JK/SK Fruit and vegetables are still on the menu! Students are still excited to tell what fruit they may have had to eat today.

Grade 2-3Students will continue their descriptions of domestic animals.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French worked extensively on passé composé of irregular verbs. They also had time to look up how to make the game Clue, for a French version. They are begining to create outlines for the game as a summative.

Grade 8 French students worked with regular verbs in passé composé, and applying terminology for conducting an investigation.

Grade 4-5 Time was spent describing each other clothing, and writing with the correct spelling 'il porte, elle porte...clothing with colour.

Grade 6 Students worked with the verb avoir, and expressions with avoir.

Grade 1 After routine work, students completed this week's work for their IB Portefolio. They also coloured a weather vane with NORD, SUB, EST, OUEST.

JK/SK routine work was followed by words for each letter of the alphabet, and a story about Câlins. Students informed me that moms give the hugs/câlins.

Grade 2-3 Today, the group read what they had written on Tuesday, and completed the description which will be used next week for the presentation.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 8 & 9 ( French) The classes were combined today to work on passé composé. Students took turn at the whiteboard (coaches all around the classroom) to get it done.
HOMEWORK: if you have not completed today's work, this is homework for Thursday.

Grade 4-5 Students showed their cross words puzzle as evidence for the homework.  The class completed reading how a police artist works to describe a suspect.

Grade 6- The theme this week is l'impératif. How to form regular verbs to give commands, or be persuasive when doing publicity.

Grade 1- Students began to name the type of work, and title of workers in different buildings and businesses around town. They mimed actions of workers, and students guessed what they were.

JK/SK Students continued reciting the alphabet in French, and learning words begining with each letter. Also, they started looking at pictures of food, and telling if it is 'Santé ou pas de santé'.

Grade 2-3 Today, students continued with the domestic animal theme: they are learning how to build a descriptive paragraph following a model.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French- Students worked with the vocabulary, added computer terminology, and continued learning to use the passé composé. Next week, there will be quizzes to make sure that this verb tense is properly used in the language.

Grade 8 French- Today, after checking the homework (using passé composé of regular verbs), students played a game of Connect 4, to challenge their skills.

Grade 3-4 Today, a lot of reading was happening to acquire vocabulary. There is a cross word to complete as homework, if it was not finished during class.

Grade 6 The class shared the reading of Rythmes de la Vie. They are excited about this unit about sounds (although they were talking about the effects of silence???). HOMEWORK is to translate les mots clés in their cahier. They had some time to do it during class, so there should not be too much to do.

Grade 1 Students had fun playing a version of snake and ladder game, and were very keen to identify buildings by looking at objects belonging to familiar building.

JK/SK Ha! French people also sing the alphabet, but with a difference here and there. Students were quick to point out where I was wrong! They finished the period with a game of Round the World, and the JKs were holding their own really well.

Grade 2-3 Students were matching syllables to find animal names. A few were finished quickly, and were working on extra work.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French- Students applied the terminology related to running an investigation. The lesson, today was le passé composé.Students also had to use the terminology by reading 'Les Manchettes'. This is homework if you have not completed this in class.

Grade 8 French Students reviewed the vocabulary, and the main lesson was passé composé. This will be the focus for the better part of the programme.

Grade 3-4 A few last minute activities were completed to wrap up unit 1. Students began to read the Leading text/story of a stolen piglet at the fair.

Grade 6 Students completed a cloze activity, where they had a bank of words (verbs, nouns…) to use in a presentation. Well done.

Grade 1 Students have begun talking about buildings around town.

JK/SK Students are now learning about body parts by singing: TÊTE, ÉPAULES, GENOUX…and playing Simon Dit!

Grade 2-3 Les animaux domestiques is their topic for unit 2. They are working on using the correct gender: féminin et masculin.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French- Today was the beginning of Unit 2. An intro text was read, and students began to work on the comprehension questions, and vocabulary. For next Wednesday, homework is to isolate and understand the terminology so that the students can use it in sentences. Make sure to have the definition for each of them. There will be a short quiz activity on this.

Grade 8 French- Students read a detective email series about a stolen song. Homework is to complete the matching of sentences, and look up the translation of the vocabulary to use in sentences. Wednesday, next class, there will be a short quiz.

Grade 4-5 All presentations were done, and question words were re-inforced throughout the period.

Grade 6 Students presented great and entertaining comic strips/slides with text. Students demonstrated imagination and a lot of humour.

Grade 1 Today was the start of the listening poster, and students designed their own as well as getting their first sticker for watching a video of Automne, C'est pas Sorcier. AND! Because it is Thanksgiving, they sang Alouette and the body of a turkey...really fun!

JK/SK Students sang about the parts of the turkey...and played their first game of Round The World. Even the JKs got into the action, and gave a good run to the SKs.

Grade 2-3 Students watched an episode of C'est pas Sorcier, À l'Automne. A class poster was created, and students began to record their listening activities.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER


Grade 9 French- Monthly assembly took most of the first period, and students were invited to play dragons (as in investers from the CBC programme) to the grade 7.

Grade 8 French- students presented their restaurant complete with a simple menu, a slogan and a proposal to the dragons for investment money.
There are students who still owe their hard copies for the work, and one did not present.

Grade 3-4 Students brainstormed questions, for which they have to provide answers to, for their favourite place.
HOMEWORK: Answer the questions, after re-writing the questions, and illustrate your work. This is due on Thursday.

Grade 6- Students were given models of sentences, and ideas for their comic strip, due on Thursday.
You will need 4 pictures (fit to a regular sheet of paper) and 2 sentences per pictures.

Grade 1 Students watched one episode of C'est pas Sorcier, l'Automne. They watched how the Earth's tilted axis in relation to the Sun give us the seasons. They recognized the colours of leaves, and why they change at this time of the year. Also, there was a segment about Fall veggies.

JK/SK It is turkey and Thanksgiving time, so they sang Alouette and changed some of the body parts to fit that of a bird: Tête, ailes, bec, pattes, le dos…

Grade 2-3 Students began a new unit: Les Animaux domestiques. Everyone had their favorite, and since they are starting with a new learner profile this month, we were able to make a parallel between human and animal, and whether they can also be knowledgeable and how.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French- The website task was presented today. I am still missing 1 presentation, and 1 hard copy of the presentation. This is a must to submit your summative in order to get your credit.

Grade 8 French- Most rough copies were edited (again, always have a hard copy of your work). TUESDAY is Dragons' Den presentation. You will be submitting your rubric, rough copy, good/final copy.

Grade 4-5 Students wrote about their film, giving it a rating and critique. If your artwork (drawing of your film poster) is not yet done, it is homework for Tuesday.

Grade 6 Students had a challenging session about the frequently used 4 verbs: aller, avoir, faire and être. The class can conjugate the verbs in the present tense, and find it difficult to choose the correct one, and apply them in sentences. There will be more practice next week, but today, EVERYONE worked really hard!

Grade 1 Being Friday, it is always a treat to have story time. La petite poule rousse was great fun for the students, and learning about learner profiles such as, Caring, Knowledgeable.

JK/SK The class was very attentive using BIG BOOKS and stories. They had fun repeating bits of the text with the reader.

Grade 2-3 The class divided in 2 groups and identified activity categories from the Pioneers UOI. They finished with identifying 2 learner profiles that pioneers would have had to demonstrate in those days.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French- rough copies on the websites were self/peer-assessed, and the final product is due on Friday the 28.

Grade 8 French Students completed a short quiz on l'impératif, and read a model to be used for their final task. They will present their winning fast food concept (students have their rubric) in the Dragon's Den style.
FRIDAY, ROUGH COPIES ARE DUE! 15 sentences, make sure the verbs are correct, and check your grammar. You were given a model to follow, and use the terminology from the unit.

Grade 3-4 Students read a variety of movie critiques. Please think about what your film's title and the picture to represent it. Friday, you will be writing your critique.

Grade 6- Students worked with er and ir ending verbs. Please study the following verbs: Aller, avoir, être and faire.

Grade 1 Much writing was done today! The class is beginning to sound and identify classroom vocabulary, and record the words in their notebook.

SK-JK They are counting, and having a competition going!

Grade 2-3 Today was a wrap up day for all thing classroom locations.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French- Rough copies were edited, and students are working on their final product: their website. Remember to submit your edited rough copy with your rubric, and your website (printed, if you are working directly off your computer, NO EXCEPTION!

Grade 8 French- Students worked with verbs at l'impératif. There will be a short quiz on Wednesday. Please study your notes.
Also, make sure you have your restaurant concept ideas so that after reading the model for the presentation, you can begin your project for presentation on Friday.

Grade 3-4 Students competed in 2 groups, answered questions about Canadian Wild Animals and their habitat from a variety of geographical areas.

Grade 6 Today's work was about les adjectifs possessifs. Please complete today's work, and answer the questions: do not forget change the adjectives from Ton to Mon when you answer.

Grade 1 Students matched their word cards to syllables. Proceeded to read and identify, then began to write them in their notebook.

JK/SK students are into a routine now, and today there was time for their first story.

Grade 2-3 The question today was: Où est…? they used different locations in and around the school.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French Students are now working on their project. Rough copy is due on Monday, for editing. Final presentation is Friday 28th.

Grade 8 French Students read stories about the humble start of several fast food restaurant, and answered questions. If it is not finished, this is homework.

Grade 3-4 Today, it was about the Canadian Fauna.

Grade 6 Students learned to form and use l'Impératif.

Grade 1 The class collaborated to match parts of words to form vocabulary from the classroom.

JK/SK students sangs, acted, and are having fun with the weather.

Grade 2-3 Pioneers! Discussion and illustration about where they come from, where they settled, and what their shelter would have been. It was an eye opener.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French Students shared their daily routine using reflexive verbs, took a formative quiz on adjectives, and received their rubric for the summative (rough copy).

Grade 8 French Quiz on Vouloir, devoir...and frequently used verbs. Students are reminded to continue reviewing those verbs.

Grade 3-4 Students learned the name of several physical feature of Canada. They labelled, and identified them by matching them on the map.

Grade 6 Today was all about conjunctions and how to compose compound sentences. They also read to each other.

Grade 1 This class was very active today. They matched classroom object cards around the room: written word to objects.

JK/SK It was all about colours, weather and the change of season. 

Grade 2-3 Classroom objects, writing exercices… more to come.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French- Students discussed their Internet and Social Media usage, and reflected on the safety precautions to take when engaging online. They also looked at TMA's website and the French blog, and offered suggestions to improve them. These activities are done ahead of the making of their own website (la tâche finale) at the end of the unit.
HOMEWORK: read p. 22,23 and answer the questions in your cahier.

Grade 7 French Students took up the homework for correction. It is important to keep pace with the work. Students played a game of Connect 4 with the following verbs: vouloir, pouvoir, devoir, aller, avoir and être.
HOMEWORK: you will have a test on Tuesday on the verbs you were working on this week. Don't forget to study your regular er,ir,re verbs too! This is review from last year.

Grade 3-4 A little geography on a Friday! The class took a tour of the provinces and territories, and matched the plane trip from the character in the unit (Natalie) across Canada.

Grade 6 Students worked on the most frequent verbs: Aller, faire, avoir, être and a few regular er, ir ending verbs.
HOMEWORK: study the conjugation of the above verbs.

Grade 1 Routine in the class is well established: greeting, calendar and weather. Today, we added a colouring/writing activity.

JK/SK The class had fun listening, and stopping me when chanting the months of the year. They also coloured a few school supplies pictures.

Grade 2-3 Today was about matching actions/activities performed at school to the written word. They finished with a word search.

NEWS FORM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French- students read a text about someone's  ideal day. They also retrieved the 'reflexive verbs'. The written task was to write their daily routine for school week, and also for the weekend.

Grade 8 French- Students worked with the 3 main verbs (vouloir, pouvoir, devoir). Please finish the activity sheets, including the multiple pronouns application.

Grade 3-4 the class took up their homework, and worked on sounds, making sentences.

Grade 6- students did a short oral quiz, and began to work on 'Les adjectifs possessifs'.

Grade 1 Today was photo day, and it happened during our French time.

JK/SK This week is about establishing a routine that engages the younger group. The SK class is knowledgeable and helpful.

Grade 2-3 Students worked with personal pronouns, and illustrated them in their notebook.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 9 French Students worked with irregular adjectives, described a classmate, and write/listen to a text filling the blanks. The final task was to write 5 sentences about yourself.
HOMEWORK: if you have not completed your short paragraph (5 sentences), please do so for next class, as well as the crossword puzzle.

Grade 8 French All students were supposed to record their vocabulary. Today's lesson was about 3 important and frequently used verbs: VOULOIR, POUVOIR AND DEVOIR.
HOMEWORK: please complete the activity sheet started in class. Also, write 2 sentences per verb, using various pronouns. Your sentences must be theme related (restaurant and food or meals).

Grade 3-4 Thank you to the students who completed page 1, which was last week's homework.
Today, students worked on different sounds, diphtongs, and read aloud a short fable using different sounds.
HOMEWORK; please complete p. 2 À table!

Grade 6 Students worked on their comprehension of the comic strip, and the vocabulary. They also listened/read to series of expressions, and identified words or expressions that did not belong.
HOMEWORK: complete activity p.8b, and study your vocabulary for Wednesday little quiz.

Grade 1 students are beginning to identify the names of the days of the week in writing as well as illustrating activity performed either during the school days, or during the weekend.

JK/SK Students responded to being greeted with 'Oui, je suis ici'. Lots of fun with the weather cards, and counting 10 little fingers that kept disappearing...

Grade 2-3 The class competed for house points to identify classroom objects. They also had an activity where they had to locate and colour objects.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 8/9 French Thank you students for returning your Reach Ahead letter. It has to be a record turn around for getting it signed and logged in.
Students brainstormed a variety of pronominal verbs, reviewed the formation of irregular adjectives, and answered a quick survey.
There was some discussion as to the accuracy of the results, but it is great that they paid attention, and noticed the differences of opinion.
HOMEWORK-Please write a short reflection about your findings and feelings toward the descriptions. 2-3 sentences to be shared on Monday.

Grade 7/8 French- Discussion about fast food (casse-croûte). Students read a comic strip about a difficult client, retrieved vocabulary, and answered comprehension questions.
HOMEWORK- record your vocabulary and its meaning in your notebook.

Grade 3-4 Students shared their favorite spot around their homes. They also took turn to read 'Natalie arrive', and vocabulary was reviewed. They also worked on a couple of strategies to use when you have difficulty to understand.
HOMEWORK- Fill in the blanks on page 1. Go as far as you can! You are being challenged!

Grade 6 Students read about, and discussed video games, especially those addressing the possibility of extraterrestrials. Now, they know that they have to complete a comic strip… more on this later.
HOMEWORK- Use Les Mots Clés, record them on sheet for Monday.

Grade 1 Sing! And, sing with signs to recognize the written word. It is wonderful to listen to many students read the weather posters.

JK/SK The routine is slowly getting established. Songs about the days of the week, counting down 10 to 0, and looking for colours.

Grade 1/2 The class is reviewing classroom objects, and how to recognize the written vocabulary.
They are still intrigued about the fact that EVERYTHING is either feminine or masculine.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

It was fantastic to see all the students, returning or new to The Maples Acaqdemy!

Grade 9 French Students were shown to their new quarters. Yes, they have their own space for French, before joining the grade 7 group for independent work. Students received an overview of the tasks for this year.
YOU WILL NEED: your laptop (charged) to do research etc. Make sure to come to class prepared, and read the blog. Please make sure to subscribe by adding your email to the right side of the blog. Students will need to download the online dictionary 'Le Petit Robert/Collins', and bookmark Bescherelle for verb conjugation.

***PARENTS MUST SIGN THE REACH AHEAD PERMISSION FORM AND RETURN IT ON THURSDAY. This is important since students are working toward obtaining a full credit for high school.
Students created their class agreement, and created the poster for their first unit components, also were made aware of due dates, and Academic Honesty Policy.

Grade 8 French Students took an overview of the accelerated program, created their own class agreement, and learned about the layout of their new textbooks. They also had a discussion about the first unit, and summative outlook.

Grade 3/4 This group jumped right in! They will be working on an accelerated programme.  Their task is to find a place close to home, but not inside the house, that really has meaning for them. They discussed class expectations, and glanced at the first unit.

Grade 6 This group is working at a grade 7 level. They are excited to begin the unit. They should be able to download 'Le Petit Robert/Collins' as a bilingual dictionary to have on hand. Also, begin logging in your French audio/video to share with the class.
The class was excited about the first task: create a comic strip to finish a story.

Grade 1 Students are establishing a routine of greetings, calendar and weather and introducing themselves. They moved around looking for different colours, and a variety of objects around the classroom.

JK/SK The SK students took the lead, and demonstrated good recall on where we left off in June. It is a good model for the JK. Class began with greetings, song 'Bonjour mes amis', weather and counting to 10...well the SK can count way past that. They also met 2 puppets to facilitate speaking, and interacting.

Grade 2/3 Great class! Students introduced themselves using the puppets, received their material, and explained to the new students how important the blog is, how to find the secret code to trade for house points. They completed the session by drawing their favorite event from the summer, and using the learner profile that best describe them.

Bienvenue à tous!

Welcome back to The Maples Academy, and to another year of learning French.
I would like to mention that students could use a 1'' binder to store, and organize their French material. I find that they work better than the duo tangs. This applies to grade 1 and up.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 Students had Beach Day (Une Journée à la plage), and the blue carpet become the ocean, beach towels were used around on the sand. Time was spent looking for vocabulary in Pictionary, illustrations etc.

Grade 9 French You did it! Congratulations!
              Students who were not writing their Math exam, watched a video called 'C'est pas Sorcier', Le Chocolat.
Gr. 8 French Students who still owed their last project, have until Wednesday morning to submit their questions (15 questions). These will be used for a Kahoot game.

Grade 5/6 Everyone worked on their 'Summer Camp'.

Grade 3/4 Students completed their 'Animal en Danger de Disparition' project.

JK/SK Students watched 2 episodes of 'Passe Partout'. They were great listener.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 Following the school BBQ, students are keen to create super hamburger, hotdogs, and sandwiches. Lots of fun and some very strange ingredients.

Grade 9 French had their final exam this morning. FSF1D is done!

Grade 3/4 Students are practicing and writing endangered animal's names. They have begun their research for their animal, and a rough copy of your information should be ready for Monday. The class will present on Wednesday.

JK/SK Today was all about 'La fête des pères'. They coloured a certificate for Dad. And, of course they sang!

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 Students learned to match parts of a sentence by listening to a reading of each. Then, they had to search, assemble the parts, and write them in their cahier.

Grade 8 French- Congratulations to Jada for sharing her Kahoot game with the class. Well done!

Grade 9 French- last review before exam (on Thursday). Make sure you review your package, if you were finished, it was marked for accuracy, so you studied the right thing. Please read and review the text and your long answers.

Grade 5/6 While reviewing 'Futur Proche', and applied it to a letter. They wrote about what their life as a summer camper is all about.

Grade 3/4 Students read about endangered animals from around the world. They will choose an animal, do a little bit of research, and communicate with the rest of the class about ways to save these animals.

JK/SK The overall theme is about farm animals and their UOI 'Is it alive). Singing and games are on the menu.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Since last Monday was  much about the concert rehearsal/pratice, there was no blog.

Today in a nutshell:
Grade 1/2 These students are taking on the world, and they will surprise you with their performance.

Grade 8 French students tackled a word family task, in pairs or small groups. This is a good way to manipulate the vocabulary.

Grade 9 French- It is review time, and everyone is working on a review package, with a large sampling of what they will have on the exam.
THE FINAL FRENCH EXAM IS THURSDAY, JUNE 14.

Grade 5/6 today's activity was about learning the difference between the verbs: Faire and Jouer.

Grade 3/4 A little last minute praticing, and refining the play for this evening.
Also, students read a story about the battle of the seasons. They will write an ending of their choice.

JK/SK Students had a few rounds of game as a review for the last term.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 Please continue practicing your concert song (memorizing). Today, the flag s and posters were completed. Great work, everyone.

Grade 8 French - work was done on interchanging verbs. This also serves as a review for grammar conventions.
Grade 9 French- Students' work was edited, and a few students were able to start their video.
The students who still have to submit their rough copy, please do so Tuesday at the latest.

Grade 5/6 Students have been preparing questions for a Kahoot game. We should be ready to play on Tuesday.

Grade 3/4 The play is ready! Students have had a session on stage, and they really have their roles down path. Homework is to bring props if needed.

JK/SK Thanks you to our talented musician and singer for helping with our songs today. The rest of the period was a few rounds of Simon Dit.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 rehearsals are going well, and the class is eager to finish memorizing their song.

Grade 8 French students worked on changing verbs from infinitive form to present tense, and recognizing endings.
Grade 9 French students who had their work printed had their editing session.
Friday, will be the deadline for the rest of the class to have their work edited, so they can begin working on their video presentation.

Grade 5/6 Good competition with  the verbs ending in RE.
For a little more fun, students are to formulate 5 questions, with 4 options (one being the correct answer). This is homework.

Grade 3/4  Students rehearsed their lines, and for an added degree of difficulty, the key words were changed to make up a different story. Everyone did really well with this.

JK/SK Animals with a story (learner profiles) and barnyard fun in song and a little drawing...everyone learned something today!

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 Students, I should say Princesses and Princes, had a royal song rehearsal, and a discussion about how they want to present the posters...

Grade 8 French- Bravo Jada and Eve for presenting your board game and have classmates playing. Your questions were diverse and on topic.

Grade 9 French- Good working session on your research for the Performance task. Wednesday, your rough copy of your script (approx. 250 words) typed, double space and printed is due for editing.

Grade 5/6 Students completed the irregular conjugation of verbs ending in RE.
After correcting the homework from Tuesday, they were invited to use the ROYALTY theme to make sentences.

Grade 3/4 Le Jardinage was the theme today! Great dedication everyone with a green thumb.

JK/SK Est-ce que c'est vivant? Today, was a medley of wildlife animal care, theme related songs, and a lot of moving around.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 The rehearsal for the song 'On écrit sur les Murs' is going well. Students broke up in small groups to practice, and they had a discussion about the international significance of the song. The class agreed to gather information about flags from their families' background.

Grade 8 French- A special mention to the group that completed their board game. You will be playing on Thursday. Also, both groups put together sentences with 'passé composé' with être for review.

Grade 9 French- received their Performance Task Rubric. This is a big year-end project (20%).
For Thursday, have your topic and a general idea to share with your teacher.
Then, Wednesday, next week, please have your rough copy of your script (use the checklist on the rubric) for the first round of edits.

Grade 5/6 The class is completing the verb unit, that was started before Exhibition. Today, was irregular RE ending verb.
Complete section G, H.

Grade 3/4 Students turned into poets! They read a short selection of poems about stormy weather. Then, they copied their selected verses, and illustrated their work.
They also had a rehearsal of their play.

JK/SK C'est vivant! It is alive. They were very happy to show me their 'NORVAL'. They also worked on pronouncing the lyrics of a French song about all kinds of eggs. They also took home a colourful bouquet of 'Jonquiilles'.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

All morning classes (Grades 1/2,7/8 and 5/6) were cancelled to accommodate Battle of The Books Competition.

Grade 3/4 students are rehearsing well, and adding details to the skit. They wrote their blurb for the MC and programme. Also, they have started to create their own rubric.

JK/SK Today, students had their teacher do a , and modelled theirs in French. They also learned to tell how and why they loved their mom! Oh, yes, it is unconditional love at its best.
This was followed by rhymes about eggs.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 Today was a mix of singing the song for the concert, and completing the colouring of 'Le Cycle de la Grenouille' (a small pamphlet).

Grade 8 French- Almost all questions are done, and students should try and finish their board game for next week.

Grade 9 French- All letters were read. A few notes about what a formal letter should have (according to the students- self reflection).
1. Logo and address of the sender
2. Name, title and address of the receiver
3. 3 paragraphs with the introduction that includes the hook (purpose of the letter)
4. Spelling, grammar checked.
5. the use of formal VOUS, instead of 'TU'.

Grade 5/6 Students did their self evaluation, and performed their skits or read their letter one last time for a formal evaluation and practice. GOOD LUCK FOR EXHIBITION TOMORROW!

Grade 3/4 The play is going really well, and students have taken over of the whole direction of the play. Even helping their peers with how to interpret their lines.

SK/JK There was a lot of moving around with imitating the actions of a frog, all the way to what to do when crossing the road (la lumière est rouge, jaune ou verte).

Grade 8 French- Each group should have 10 to 20 questions related to their theme for the board game.
Grade 9 French- Students who had their rough copy of a formal letter (250 words) had their work edited this morning. Please try to have your good copy with all the corrections done for Wednesday.

Grade 5/6 Exhibition and the French component is done! Just a little bit of polishing with pronunciation, and it is done!

Grade 3/4 Students are practising the short play, and already adding expression and intonation.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 Today, students played telephone! They learned a short dialogue, practiced as a group, then with a partner.

Grade 8 French- Students worked on their board game, and should have 10 questions ready for Monday.

Grade 9 French- Students worked on their formal letter. ROUGH COPY IS DUE ON MONDAY TO BE ASSESSED AND EDITED. Please have it typed AND printed, and do not forget to have it double spaced to accommodate editing.

Grade 5/6 Groups have recorded their skits, read their letters, and received feedback.

Grade 3/4 The class still had 2 presentations to listened to, and then rehearsed the play. It is going really well!

JK/SK Since we have warmer weather, the frog are out and loud at night. So, after discussing what Spring flowers we have in our gardens, students listened to facts about frogs.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 The lesson began with drawing all things 'Spring', such as grenouille, tulipe, mars, avril, mai, bourgeon...This was followed with a word search.

Grade 8 French- students have begun to create a Monopoly style board game with different themes: nourriture, sports, océan et l'eau.

Grade 9 French- Students are working on a formal letter to a celebrity. The object is to invite them to participate in a charity event of their preference.
HOMEWORK; please have p 48 completed for Thursday.

Grade 5/6 All French texts have been edited (several times), and after practice for fluency and intonation, groups have started to video their oral portion. Good work everyone!

Grade 3/4 The class have submitted their summative 'Au Feu', 'Mon Plan d'Évacuation'. Students have really worked hard on this unit, and now begins the work for the play.

JK/SK This was the last of transportation vocabulary session. They also used chairs as props to review prepositions: sur, devant, derrière, sous, à côté de moi et dans.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 Students watched a video about Le Printemps. Everything About how nature changes. Students were very attentive, and were able to answer several questions about what they had watched.

Grade 8 French- Students who had not done their homework (translate and record les mots clés for the unit), completed this task, and worked on the comprehension segment about the text read on Wednesday. All tasks should be completed for Tuesday, May 1st.

Grade 9 French-After correcting and clarifying a few grammar concepts about COD/COI students worked independently on interchanging verb tenses for extra practice.

Grade 5/6 Today was the second and third round of editing for all groups. Students are almost ready to video their skits (next week).

Grade 3/4 Everyone was working on their summative. AU FEU! Mon plan d'évacuation. They drew floor plan of their home, plan escape routes, and wrote instructions for exiting their house safely.

JK/SK Students watched a short video talking about how things grow in the Spring.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

JK/SK This morning's activity was to learn about the names of transportation vehicles. Students worked in pairs to draw: un tracteur, une voiture, un avion, un bateau, un train...

Grade 8 French took up their homework  for corrections and further explanation.
They took turns to read aloud a short text as an introduction to the unit on transportation.
HOMEWORK list 'les mots clés' and find their meaning. Please use your cahier!

Grade 9 French- Students worked in groups to peer assess Monday's homework. They also worked individually to test their skills with pronom d'objet direct and indirect.

Grade 5/6 Exhibition is on! All groups had one round of editing work to their letter or skit. Students are aware that this process may take some time with several editing to be done.

Grade 3/4 Students worked on a dialogue about calling (9-1-1). They rehearsed with a partner, then recorded themselves. The play back was informative. Also, they chose to do a play for the Spring Concert!.

Grade 1/2  It is still time to discuss how to make our classroom cleaner in the context of Earth Month. Students enjoyed taking action, and executing instructions about tidying up their environment.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 This week is about plants. Students identified parts of the plant: racines, tige, fleurs, feuilles...There talks  about the sun, water, soil, warmth...

Grade 7/8 The lesson today was about the placement of pronouns, specifically 'Y', and complements d'objet direct/indirect. (le, la, les, l', lui, leur).
HOMEWORK:  complete the activity sheet started during class. We will take this up on Wednesday. Continue reviewing your notes while completing the exercise.

Grade 5/6 After marking homework (if it was not completed, please have it done for Wednesday), students were given time to work on their French component for their Exhibition. Begin writing your rough drafts for either your skits or letters.

Grade 3/4 Students wrote down instructions to be used for their 'Plan d'évacuation' (la tâche finale). They acted out a simple set of instructions in case of a fire. They also sourced 3-5 key sentences to use in their work.

JK/SK The class worked with vocabulary about plants and growing. They also had a colouring activity about what the ingredients for growing a plant/flower would be: soleil, eau, la pluie, le sol, les feuilles...

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 La Journée de la Terre! Students brainstormed ideas about all forms of   pollution, including plastic. It was decided by the class that tomorrow they would try to bring litter-less lunch and snacks, and a placemat. Good luck!

Grade 7 & 8 did an activity for Earth Day. They worked in groups and wrote sentences about what Earth Day means to them. These phrases were then edited on the board.

Grade 5/6 Super work from the whole class. They almost completed the -Re verb package. Homework: finish to exercise D.

Grade 3/4 Students read aloud a short story about a young girl calling the fire station. They also answered comprehension questions.

JK/SK To honour Earth Day (tomorrow at the school), they looked at a book about all things plant. They went the classroom and looked for anything that would be made of plant material. J'ai trouvé...

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 The class watched a video about where the water in our towns comes from and where the used water is being treated. This wrapped up their unit on Water Cycle.

Grade 7/8 Students watched a video about the making of . It involved animation technology, design, acting, voice over etc. A short discussion followed.

Grade 5/6  Students watched a video about where the water in our towns comes from and where the used water is being treated. Following the film, students brainstormed actions that could be taken to preserve the water we have. (Earth day is next week). Mr. Hunt jumped in the discussion with a quick lesson in Chemistry about salt, calcium...

Grade 3/4 Dictionary skills at its best. Two groups set out to research vocabulary, and they also played Round The World to learn the new vocabulary.

JK/SK It was Cowboy/girl day, and because it is Friday, students played a variety of games about the vocabulary, preposition, water etc...

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 Students should be very proud of their work today. They presented their water project to the JK/SK, and did a superb job!

Grade 7/8 Stories were completed today. The use of passé composé was the main component for this summative.

Grade 5/6 The verbs ending in 'IR' irregular and regular ones are all done! Now on to the 'RE' verbs.

Grade 3/4 Today was about 'aller' (to go). A lot of oral practice with this one.

JK/SK Students watched a video showing the rooms and other parts of the house. Then, they practiced saying what colours they had in certain parts of the house.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

JK/SK Today, there was a slight change in schedule, and French was first thing this morning. Students were moving around to act out (and say) the parts of the house. They also talked about what their idea of a home is, and how different it could be for other people. J'ai un toit, une cheminée, un plafond, un plancher, des murs, une fenêtre et une porte: qui suis-je? UNE MAISON!

Grade 7/8 Students were given the task to use 6 pictures which included a verb, and useful vocabulary. They had to use passé composé (most of the verbs required être as an auxiliary).
Students submitted a rough draft. and the task will be finished on Thursday.

Grade 5/6 The class is halfway through the verb unit, and today was about irregular 'ir' verbs.
Homework: please work with the sections you were given (it may be different for each students). However, do not work on Section F. You will be doing this on Thursday.

Grade 3/4 Students took up the homework from last week, which was to identify the objects in a garage sale. Following this they coloured and drew objects as instructed. It was not easy, but everyone got the idea very quickly. It was a combination of colours, objects, positioning and general vocabulary.
Homework: p. 12 match 2 syllables to make up a word.

Grade 1/2 Students are getting ready to present their project about water.  They have requested to have an audience, and on Thursday after more practice, they will present to the JK/SK. They can practice at home (students themselves requested this), but they will have time of practice on Thursday a.m.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 Students were busy with making, drawing and labelling posters about water in its various forms. Bravo!

Grade 7/8 Students continued a variety of activities about passé composé and the appropriate choice of verbs.
HOMEWORK- continue working and reviewing what has been done with these verbs. Next class, you will have to complete an activity with vocabulary and pictures. You will be asked to make an original story.

Grade 5/6 The class has begun a new category of verbs 'IR' regular verbs.
HOMEWORK; finish the sections started this morning, and do the last section with 6 sentences beginning with JE, TU, IL, NOUS, VOUS, ELLES, and complete the sentences with an appropriate ending.  Please use a different verb for each.

Grade 3/4 Today, the class applied the concept of using 'tout, tous, toute, toutes'.
They also worked on their dictionary skills when researching for the gender of a word. There was also a short oral segment to learn how to use 'mon, ma, mes, ton, ta, tes'.

JK/SK  Today was about expanding Spring and Water related terminology. Le petit poisson nage et fait des bulles, and un arbre et une branche, avec un nid, un oeuf et un oiseau avec une coquille sur la tête.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 Previewing April's Earth Day, students brainstormed all things water.
Vocabulary included: océan, lac, rivière, la pluie, le brouillard, évaporation, condensation, précipitation etc.
They have begun to investigate the water system in our town versus countryside.

Grade 7/8 The lesson continues to be about verbs requiring être in passé composé.
HOMEWORK; complete today's activity and make sure to bring everything back for next class (this includes textbooks AND your homework).

Grade 5/6 Students who completed their verb package (ER) as requested for homework, thank you! It also means that you were successful in today's quiz.
Thursday, the class will begin 'IR' verbs.
IT IS IMPORTANT NOT TO FALL BEHIND, AS IT IS AN INTENSE UNIT, AND THIS MATERIAL WILL BE NEEDED FOR EXHIBITION.

Grade 3/4 Today's lesson was about 'TOUT', and its many forms. Students were very quick to understand the concept, and were soon building their own sentences.

JK/SK Students identified the different bodies of water.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 Today, students had a bird hunt. No birds were hurt, and everyone left with their own bird. They had to find them by following specific instructions.

Grade 9 French Presentations of a travel journal were done, and each had special elements that reflected personal interests.
Grade 8 French were today's audience.

Grade 5/6 The present unit is all about verbs. Today, students refreshed their memory with 'er' ending verbs, while working on their package.
HOMEWORK; complete the package you started during class. Study, you will have a quiz next week.
This work will be helpful when tackling your French component for Exhibition.

Grade 3/4 Students worked on basic vocabulary, and completed a word search.
HOMEWORK; if you have not yet finished the word search, please do so as your homework.

JK/SK Students had an interactive story about an Easter bunny. This was followed by a colouring session.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Welcome back for the third and last term.

Grade 1/2 brainstormed vocabulary for Easter, and the class Easter Hunt on Wednesday. They have recorded their words, and learned how to follow directions. Thursday, they will create a hunt, complete with locations and instructions.

Grade 7/8 both groups worked on passé composé with the verb 'être'. Students who did not complete today's activity should consider this their homework.
That is to say: minimum 5 complete sentences.
A REMINDER: Grade 9 French: your summative is due on Wednesday!
3 journal entries (about 5 sentences each). Don't forget to put dates too.

Grade 5/6 Students worked on 2 basic verbs: avoir and être, as well as prepositions.

Grade 3/4 Students have begun a new unit about fire prevention and evacuation plans. They took turns to read aloud, and brainstorm the new vocabulary.

JK/SK This week's focus is about an Easter Hunt. How to tell where things are, and how to get there.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 students had fun working with the valises. VALISES!!! yes, they look like luggage, and have cards with letters to place and form words. There is one with math questions too!

Grade 7/8 French Presentations were done today. There were lovely art pieces, and students produced a description following a model. They reflected on their pronunciation, and on how to improve. There is an app (free) they can put their French text to speech, and practice.
Grade 9 French students worked on their 3 journal draft entries. Presentations are due March 26 when we return. See the previous post if you need clarifications. You also have the rubric.

Grade 5/6 After working so hard on their last summative, students deserved to have a little work with technology. Meaning: they entered their texts in a text to speech app, and played back (practiced) their work.
Also, it was discussed and agreed that they would log 2 sessions of 20 minutes each of listening/viewing French material. TV5.ORG is a good place to start. They have short videos...look  for 'Jeunesse' and word games too.

Grade 3/4 students were celebrating St Patrick with lots of green. They talked about modes of transportation and where to go on vacation. They ended up drawing and colouring 'un pont, une rivière, un arc en ciel, un lutin et un pot d'or'.

JK/SK To round up the week with stories and fables, today was about 'Le lièvre et la tortue.' It was a story where students had to do certain actions when they heard key words. Noisy and fun! This was followed by a related coloring activity.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 The class watched a virtual class on how to describe a person. They also followed the model, and began describing their classmate.

Grade 9 French* Students played a Kahoot game about futur simple. This is a simple way to keep this grammar concept fresh on their mind. Students may self-assess their knowledge, and their answers are recorded with the stats the game offers.
HERE ARE THE INSTRUCTIONS (EACH STUDENT HAS A RUBRIC ALSO) FOR THE SUMMATIVE DUE MARCH 27.
1. Pick an historical figure from the past. As discussed, this person must be deceased.
2. You will have to write 3 travel journal entries (5 sentences each) describing when your encounter occurs (year and date), where you are (can be another country). Use your 5 senses, it helps for the description.
3. During your talk with this famous person, what did you say, what did he/she say?
4. Use all appropriate verb tenses, vocabulary, and check your spelling.

Grade 7/8 French* Students are almost ready for presentations which will take place THURSDAY, March 8th.

Grade 5/6 After a fantastic presentation session last Friday, students deserved a couple of rounds of Kahoot games. They were very engaged and played well. Their answers and feedback are returned to the teacher as statistics, and are good formative activities.

Grade 3/4  Students presented their findings about a flight event which they researched. They played their journalists roles, were able to give dates (years have 4 digit numbers), and reflected on how they learned so much by listening to everyone's work.
They also recorded their oral presentation, and they played them back to hear how they sound.

JK/SK The class watched 'Le Petit Chaperon Rouge' as theatre  play. There were songs that they already knew, and the class ended with another tale of a wolf and 3 little pigs. Very busy today.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 Today's activity was two fold. First, pre-rehearse sentences in writing, then illustration. Students also had some free time to read aloud. A few students are beginning to sound out words, and take pleasure in reading to each other.

Grade 8- French The class worked on the description of their work of art, following a model. Next week, they will be able to edit their rough copy, and present their work.

Grade 9 French- The concept of the pronom d'objet direct has been reviewed today. Students read a short text about the Titanic, and answered 4 questions. They also received their rubric for the summative Due March 27. Next week, they will work on their rough copy.

Grade 5/6 CONGRATULATIONS ON A JOB WELL DONE! The restaurant unit is always a hit, however this year, students were so well prepared and played their roles perfectly.

Grade 3/4 Today, students worked on their summative (tâche finale). Everyone demonstrated good inquiry skills. All work will be presented on Tuesday.

JK/SK Students worked in 2 groups today, and took turns to rotate through several activities. Great work all around.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 Students used writing whiteboards to draw what they heard, and had to place the given object in the correct position.
They used rehearsed questions and answers, such as 'où est la bicyclette? La bicyclette est devant la porte.'

Grade 5/6 Students were able to have a practice session for their role play. Please be ready to present on Friday. Memorize your dialogue!

Grade 7/8 French- Students used a presentation model for an art piece presentation. For Friday, you should have your idea of what you wish to present.
On Friday, you will be working on your rough draft, and presentations are next week.
Grade 9 French-Students played 3 games of Kahoot to review Futur Simple. The stats were made available, and a few students did well. I will be expecting all of your answers that were due today, on Friday***NO EXCEPTIONS***

Grade 3/4 Today was research day. Everyone seems to have found a flight event they want to talk about. Friday is for rough copies to be edited, and next week is for presentations.

JK/SK There was a short program from Passe-Partout learning how to make maple sugar.
They also played a lively game of Simon-dit.

Grade 1/2 Students have begun to read simple sentences. They are about describing a variety of attitudes. There is also the introduction of the negative form.

JK/SK The class is starting to learn about maple syrup making. It is a sweet time! Lots of stories and colouring. If we wait after March break...it will be too late.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 Students finished their story posters with sentences. The classroom looks quite colourful.

Grade 8 French Students are continuing their work on the partitive.
HOMEWORK IS TO COMPLETE THE SENTENCES FROM P.69 (textbook) to their notebook. Please work on any unfinished work, in order to not fall behind.

Grade 9 French In pairs, students read 7 statements, and matched correct answers. Also, teacher read a text with the students, and HOMEWORK IS TO FINISH ANSWERING QUESTIONS 1 TO 6 FOR MONDAY.

Grade 5/6 The class collaborated to create a script for the restaurant unit. Everyone turned in their menus, and HOMEWORK IS TO BEGIN MEMORIZING THE SCRIPT. They also had a short practice in class today.

Grade 3/4 The class had made puppets, and acted out their parts while the teacher read the Le petit Chaperon Rouge et Les Trois Petits Cochons.
They also learned about useful verbs, and adjectives for describing flight events.

JK/SK Today we started to learn about opposites. Students were engaged, and finding all kinds of examples around the classroom.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 Students worked in pairs or small groups to re-create a story board, and a few sentences based on 'L'arbre magique de Lina'.

French Gr. 8 The lesson was about le partitif and the negative. They applied the   vocabulary from the unit. This is a concept that needed reviewing.
Grade 9 French- Letters were read aloud for peer assessment. This unit is now complete.

Grade 5/6 The class used the French period to complete the menu component (this is homework to decorate and prepare your final copy for Thursday).

Grade 3/4 After finishing reading the text on flying, and extracting verbs and expressions, students collaborated to create their own story using the textbook as a model.

JK/SK The class watched a video on animal characters having their own 'olympics', and importance on being happy about everyone's success.

Grade 1/2 A Valentine kink of poem. The students are so proud! They also decorated with keys, hearts etc.

Grade 5/6 The menus are coming along nicely. Much research was done as well.

Grade 8 French worked on the unit vocabulary, and are encouraged to complete today's work as homework.

Grade 9 French Letters have been edited, and are due to be presented on Tuesday next week.

Grade 3/4 Students read short articles about flight events from the past.

JK/SK worked on their Valentine poem and coloring.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 In order to complete the animal and adjectives unit, students listened to the last riddle: Sohoorang, the white tiger, mascot of the 2018 Winter Olympics. They created their own mascot for our school.

Grade 9 French- Students who had not completed last week's task, worked on their 5 sentence reflection on G.M.O. This was due today by 4 pm.
Grade 8 French- Students listened to a selection of short texts about Art. They worked on vocabulary as well.

Grade 5/6 The class was split into 2 groups for a lively battle of verbs. The game got very competitive, however, everyone was a winner! This class has several students who recognize and utilize strategies.

Grade 3/4 Students had their booklet edited, and presented to the class. A few students who were done early, worked with readers (graded books), and completed activities.

JK/SK As we are gearing toward the Olympics 2018, the Games Mascot was introduced. Please meet Soohorang, the white tiger.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

JK/SK It was fun to begin the day with our younger students. It started with a lesson in the gym with a very special guest: Gunther, la marmotte. We had our very own groundhog (Gunther) to experience how it would see its shadow.

Grade 7/8 Today's focus was to play with passé composé, and re-create a grid with regular verbs.
Grade 9 French Students were completing their sentences (5) about the video they watched in class and at home. ALL 5 SENTENCES (YOUR REFLECTION) ARE DUE ON TUESDAY.

Grade 5/6 Students listened to a recording of a dialogue heard in a restaurant. They also had a chance to record themselves with a partner for further practice.
Everyone has chosen a menu/restaurant theme to work on next week.

Grade 3/4 Almost everyone finished their sentences, worked on their booklets. These should be presented on Tuesday.

Grade 1/2 Today was for completing the week's activities, and collaborate with partners on topics such as animals and adjectives, and winter clothing vocabulary.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 The class took on a word search with vocabulary about Winter clothes (this is a short review). Also, they have a little homework to complete for Friday. The grade 2s should be able to finish it, and the grade 1s may try a couple of pictures. If the grade ones find it too difficult, no worries, we will complete it Friday.

Grade 7 & 8 received their exams back to review. While the Grade 8 French group worked on sections of the test and made corrections, the Grade 9 French started to watch a video about G.M.O. food.

HOMEWORK: please watch the video again at home (Google C'est pas Sorcier, Les O.G.M), and write a 5 sentence reflection to hand in on Friday.

Grade 3/4 Students brainstormed sentences to use in their booklet for La Tâche Finale for this unit.

Grade 1/2 The class was like a beehive of activity. Students picked up their work from Tuesday, and completed their short description of an animal. A few students chose to do two! Great work all around.

Grade 8 French, and a few Grade 9 French- students put the last touch on their exam booklet.
STUDY AND REVIEW FOR MONDAY 29, and make sure to bring your review/exam booklet back.

Grade 5/6 The new unit on restaurant has begun. This unit is also the platform to learn new verbs.
HOMEWORK: memorize the 4 verbs learned today.

Grade 3/4 Students are working on verbs to better describe activities of social animals.

JK/SK students listened to a modified story of 'Le Petit Chaperon Rouge' where they had to interact with the narrator. They also talked about going to see a play.
The end of the lesson was about 'sucré ou salé' where they had to indicate what different foods are.

Grade 1/2 Students did an oral activity where they listened to sentences and did a translation as a response. They also had a lively game of 'Simon dit'.

Grade 7/8 One group read a story that will be part of their exam in the comprehension segment. On Tuesday, questions will be also reviewed.
Grade 9 French- students had their review booklet corrected, and a few concepts clarified.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE EXAM DATE IS NOW JANUARY 29 (MONDAY) due to a conflicting date with ODSS visit to the school next week.

JK/SK Everyone had fun with a new game (new to some students) which includes new and old vocabulary and actions.

Grade 3/4 Students are beginning to be quite competent with adjectives, and how to put them in agreement with the nouns.

Grade 5/6 Most students presented their projects. Students who were absent due to competition or other commitments will present on Tuesday.

Enjoy the mild weather and the coming weekend.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2-students matched short sentences to pictures, and coloured according to the instructions given in the sentences.

Grade 7/8 All students worked on passé composé, and played games of Connect 4.
MID TERM EXAM WILL BE NEXT THURSDAY 25.

Grade 5/6 Great work was accomplished, and all editing was done today. Students, please remember to have your work illustrated, with a title!

Grade 3/4 The class continued reading about activities that human and insects or animals may have in common, and today, they read about what humans do differently.
Homework is to continue unscrambling adjectives. I know it is difficult, however students did a fantastic job during class. SO, DO YOUR BEST, AND WE WILL TAKE THIS UP ON FRIDAY.

JK/SK The Winter activities continue, and students were able to mime the sports or activity of their choice. The class concluded with a contest of knowledge, which they won hands down.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 The class began with oral descriptions of animals. Each group was given one animal to describe. They also applied their skills, and wrote in their notebook what they had done with their peers.

Grade 8 French Students went over their mid term exam (mock exam), and worked on different sections. Each student is encouraged to work on this individually, and come prepared with their questions for next class.

Grade 9 French Students worked in small groups on the exam. Next class, you will be invited to share your answers and any questions you may have.

Grade 5/6 Excellent work today! Most students had their rough draft edited. Presentations are on Friday!

Grade 3/4 The class watched a short documentary about ants (Les fourmis). The level of comprehension was high, and students had a lot to discuss, as well as establishing links to the units. Much vocabulary was introduced and notes.

JK/SK Students are now learning about winter sports and activities.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 We have brave students in this class. Grade 2s were volunteering to read from the textbook. They are learning about 'quadrupèdes'. The class is working on making the difference between feminine and masculine adjectives, and matching them to animals.

Grade 8 French students worked in small groups on a prepared mock exam.

Grade 9 French -The lesson today was about 'futur simple' for regular and irregular verbs, and they also went over a short text they will have on their mid terms.

Grade 5/6 students are doing research (trying and experimenting on finding French websites). Their summative for this unit is about careers. They are researching and will be reporting on the education needed to achieve their dream.

Grade 3/4 Students are coming along nicely reading from the textbook. Today, they were able to locate different verbs and matching them to specific adjectives.

JK/SK The class continues to work on Winter clothing, and today they had a coloring activity and at story time, they learned about 'bonhomme de neige'.

BONNE ANNÉE À TOUS!!!

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH CORNER

Grade 1/2 Students were working in groups, assembling  phrase segments. They recorded their findings in their notebooks.

Grade 3/4 A new year, a new unit! Students are working on special adjectives.

Grade 5/6 A welcome crossword puzzle was completed. Then, students brainstormed the major points for their projects on careers.

Grade 7/8 Students have begun their review for mid term exams. They were given sample tests to see where they should focus their attention.

JK/SK This month is about wearing warm clothes. They love singing, even while dressing to go outside for recess. They are learning very fast.
